Will Federal Minimum Wage Increase Be First on the Dem's Agenda?

Featured Replies

LoL..

Exxon is in desparate need for tax breaks.

I'm just not sure I get how any human being of conscious can oppose this move. I absolutely understand opposing many of the social agendas pushed by the more liberal wing of the party, but comon, minimum wage going up "a little"?

How many Mom and Pops get pushed out of business if this happens? I think basically none. The employers who pay minimum wage are the biggest of the big, and even then only in rural/depressed areas.

Keep in mind that 99 was the last time the minimum wage went up. Since then, many of the workers that rely on a 40 hr week at Wendy's etc have recieved basically the same pay while gas has DOUBLED in cost.

Unless you own a business that relies on minimum wage labor, how could you oppose this?

Again, assuming the states do not reconfigure the criteria on which they base who gets state assistance, an increase in the minimum wage just shifts the burden from the state to the richest corporations in the country.

I'd be curious to see some non-partisan studies on this issue.

It doesn't matter. The Dems are still not going to be able to pass an agenda.

If a person was earning minimum wage at Wendy's in 1999 and is still at Wendy's earning minimum wage 7 years later, I am going out on a limb here and assume that they have some other problems in their lives.

You have to remember, every penny that we increase the minimum wage will be recirculated back into the economy immediately. These folks can not afford to save or invest.

Yes. Gridlock will ensue if there is an agenda presented that goes far to the left.

Has anyone ever seen any credible numbers on how many people actually make minimum wage and how long the average worker makes that figure? I think that would be an interesting statistic.

Lets not forget that the minimum wage currently set by the market is much higher that the wage that it would possibly be raised to by our new congress, therefore making a hike in minimum wage nothing more than a useless political ploy.

Visit some depressed area man! Ever been to SW Virginia, parts of EKY?

ADULTS who work full-time could really benefit from dollar raise. And YES, the do stay stuck at those wages. Should these people have worked harder in school or whatever? That answer is obvious, but what else can they do?

If the minimum wage goes up a buck, maybe some poor families get to buy their kids a nice gift for their birthday, have a little extra money around to buy them a treat, or even take their kid to a movie!

Jesus people. This is the only humane thing to do

Where do you find the most people working for minimum wage? Areas already having high unemployment rates. Competition and labor shortages push hourly rates upward. Raising the minimum wage tends to increase unemployment rates in areas already having depressed economies. Most states have already passed their own minimum wage laws. Why does this need to be a federal issue?

Please name me the jobs that pay 5.15/hour, even in depressed areas. High School kids make 6.75/hour starting at Micky D's. The market sets minimum wage currently far higher than our government sets it. What do you propose to make minimum wage? 9.00/hour? The rise will not be enough to effect actual wages in the economy. Once again, if you have jobs that you know of in these depressed areas that are long term and currently pay minimum wage, please let me know.

Is there any way that we could tie it to another huge tax break for the oil companies?

Frances

What tax break did oil companies get that other corporations, small or big, did not?

Exxon pays roughly three times as much in taxes as it makes in profits. Who do liberals think pay for tax increases on companies? Gas prices will jump if Pelosi gets her way.

You simply can't raise the taxes on a need without the tax being passed on to the consumer.

Raising the minimum wage slightly (

However, raising the minimum wage significantly would be counter productive since it would fuel inflation. A significant increase would affect most bussinesses and a business will always attempt to pass on their costs to the consumer. Too often when people contemplate raising the minimum wage they think statically when the economy is dynamic. People who believe raising the minimum wage from $5/hour to $10/hour would help the working poor ignore the fact that $10 would then only be worth about what $5 is today. Making more money doesn't help if the cost of living goes up a commensurate amount.
