I have to agree with futurecoach here. Nothing classless about getting work in with your starting offense when they haven’t had much of an opportunity. Beechwood is preparing for a deep playoff run and they wouldn’t be doing their kids any favors by pulling them, especially if they have things they need to work on.

This discussion about when to bench the starters comes up every year somewhere, usually when district games start. Then that is followed by the discussion about teams continuing to score and throw the ball when the second team is in. My view is the starters stay in till there is a running clock. I have no problem with teams leaving starters in the entire first half unless the score gets totally out of hand. From what I have seen over the years, Beechwood is one of the best at handling these lopsided games with class and trying to keep the score down. Coach Rash will even tell officials to throw a penalty flag if the second team runs a long scoring play to try and keep the score down. I believe there was a game against Ludlow several years ago that Beechwood pulled their starting offense with 8 or 9 minutes to go in the first half because it was already a running clock.

 

I guess the good news for Beechwood is next year these 1A teams will be complaining about Newport Catholic running up the score on them instead of Beechwood.

You clearly don’t know what a draw looks like...other than on a parade float.

 

Ludlow has wins of 48 to 0 and 56 to 0 over Bracken and Gallatin County this year. I would assume Ludlow had first team in till at least running clock in those games too. Which nothing wrong with that and nothing classless about that and I don't think anyone complained about that. Just like there was nothing classless about this imo. So I will have to agree to disagree with my fellow Ludlow person on this, based off just what I read in the update thread.

 

This is a good question for @BIGZIG. How did Ludlow handle these blowout games? When did the running clock start? When did Ludlow pulls it starters?

Both teams in my opinion handle themselves with class. Ludlow is doing things the right way and getting better. I think they have a great chance for a win in the playoffs. The Tigers are a class program and play their starters until the running clock, that is what you are supposed to do. It's a shame it only takes one disgruntled fan to reflect poorly on a program.

In terms of the game. Ludlow has a lot of positives. They have a strong running game and a good defensive line. They made running the ball difficult for Beechwood at times. In my opinion they got away from that running game when they were down a couple scores, and it played into the Tigers favor. In the end, the Tigers just had too many weapons and options. I am sure the rest of Ludlow is proud of their team. They will match up very well with NewCath going forward.

Please can we discuss the game and any players that played well.

It may seem strange to say considering the final score, but I thought Ludlow played well. They made Beechwood work hard on offense for their points. Ludlow's defense did a very good job against Beechwood's running game. The Beechwood points came very fast on some big plays by John Odom.

 

It was a 7-0 game at the very end of the first quarter when Beechwood QB Cam Hergott took advantage of Ludlow's defense loading the box and hit TE Luke Bolger with a 25 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-0. That is when the John Odom onslaught happened. After a 3 and out on Ludlow's next possession, Odom turned on the jets for a punt return touchdown and one minute into the second quarter it was 21-0. On the next possession Odom intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown, making it 28-0. In less than 2 1/2 minutes the game went from 7-0 to 28-0 with John Odom making almost all of that happen.

 

From there, Beechwood added another touchdown late in the second quarter on a 43 yard pass and run from Hergott to Hank Birindelli. Then Odom intercepted another pass and Hergott scored on a designed QB draw play with 27 seconds left in the half to make the halftime score 41-0.

 

I agree with the post above that Ludlow should have stuck to the running game more. They were making some plays and first downs from the running game. They should have kept control of the ball as much as possible and kept the ball away from Beechwood. Almost all the Beechwood damage came off of interceptions and huge losses on sack plays. Ludlow is a solid team and I think they will get the win over Bellevue.

 

Finally, if you haven't been to a Ludlow homecoming, you should go to one. They do a great job. The floats that each class put together are fantastic. They are great quality and some of the floats include automation in the movements of the characters on the floats. I was really looking forward to Ludlow's homecoming halftime and it was worth sitting in some rain to see it. Congratulations to all the Ludlow community on a very fun and entertaining halftime homecoming ceremony.
