As some of you know I sky watch seven days a week weather permitting and it is normally uneventful but tonight I hit the jackpot as soon as I walked outside around 830pm EDT.

 

The orb of light immediately caught my attention because it was brighter than anything in the sky. It was north/northwest of my position and it was moving at a higher rate of speed than jets move in the sky, I would estimate twice as fast.

 

The orb of light was moving to the south/southeast in a heading I don't ever recall seeing jets use.

 

As the orb of light moved towards me and then past me the intensity of the light never changed and it was bright white the whole time. Additionally, I didn't hear anything and if it was a jet and the lights were that bright it would have definitely been audible.

 

Suddenly the light dimmed (maybe two seconds), then it went to an red/orange color that was much less intense (maybe two seconds again) and then disappeared completely.

 

With all that said, it could have been something from our own military that I am unfamiliar with, but it certainly didn't appear to be any type of commercial aircraft.

The bright orb of light was much bigger, brighter, and slower than a shooting star and I should have stated this in my first post but I would estimate I watched the bright orb of light for close to 45 seconds.

That's what I was going to say. Read yesterday that a lot of military aircraft was being moved from Florida because of the hurricane. Maybe it was something that we typically wouldn't see in this area, like a Hawkeye radar plane?

Whatever it was it was moving to the south/southeast which would be away from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio.

 

My default position on this "sighting" is that it was man made. The performance of the orb appeared to be well within our ability. However, the lighting was unlike any other aircraft I have ever seen and it was so bright, yet made no sound, that it still has me baffled.

My initial thought was Chinese lantern or satellite, but it sounds like it may have been moving too fast for either.

Could it have been the ISS? I have the "Night Sky" app which tells me when it is going to fly over, so I have stayed out to see it a few times. It appears like a bit brighter star which moves from horizon to horizon in minutes. The only reason I believe it would change appearance would be due to some high clouds.
