Mayfield's offense

Featured Replies

The Cards have scored a 2A best 281 points (48 ppg) so far, and are averaging 471 yards per game, also tops in the class. They have the top QB in 2A (Stinson leads 2A in passing yards and TDs with zero interceptions) and one of the top running backs (Matthews ranks 3rd in 2A in rushing). Through six games, they've proven unstoppable. They just hung 45 points on one of 3A's best defenses.

Mayfield has had some great offenses over the decades, but especially in the last 7-8 years. Through six games, is this one of their best ever? Is the potential there for them to be recognized as the best?

They are scary good....blowing out Corbin was a statement.

I'm thinking this could be their best. Blowing out Corbin was no fluke. Corbin is legit.

The numbers sure are stacking up as this being their best offense. The Mayfield people are talking about this as being perhaps their best offense ever. They are very high on QB Stinson and on being able to change things up with their option/run QB. That makes this offense multi-faceted and even tougher to defend.

From what I remember they have a lot of good athletes coming back that contributed last year. Has the Guthrie kid played much QB at all or defense and WR? Either way what they are doing offensively against their schedule has been impressive. West bracket of 2A is loaded once again this year.

I have been present for every game except the Graves Co game, and from my observations.....

The run game isn't as potent as years past. But they do a great job sticking with it, and even if the holes aren't opening up early, eventually things break lose. But they never abandon the run game. Matthews is a slasher/speedster, not a bruiser, so he just needs to find daylight. But if he does, he is gone.

The pass game is a well oiled machine. As I said, run game hasn't been as potent, but the screen pass success they have more than makes up for it. This particular group just has so many weapons that you can't key on any one guy. And the QB has the arm to really stretch the field and can make all the throws. He made some really nice, sideline, on the move throws against Corbin, which showed me how much better his accuracy has gotten. His two drawbacks are 1.) lack of mobility. If protection breaks down, he isn't outrunning anyone. 2.) Sometimes his deeper passes tend to float. The better defenses might make him pay for that. As far as the receivers, they all run great routes and I rarely see a dropped pass. Neely seems to be the most dependable and consistent. And Perry has come out of nowhere this year.

The offensive line has come a long way and improved each week. This team will only go as far as the line will take them though. But the Corbin game was an eye opener. They absolutely dominated the LOS. I would like to see better run blocking, but all in all they have done well.

I don't really get into the whole "best offense ever" talk. They are really good. If they want to be called the best, they need the ring on their finger first.

As one who is familiar with the history of Mayfield football, being nearby it, it is ironic how they are now known for flinging the ball around the field. They built that program on lining up in the wishbone, dominating the line of scrimmage, and running the hell out of the ball. Very simple playbook that could not be stopped. Each time they would pass the ball it would be a home run shot since the other team was kept off balance. A typical passing stat line would be: 3-5, 125 yards, 2TDs. Mad respect for the Cardinals for adjusting their style of play over time. That is why they are who they are.

This is the best Mayfield offense I have seen. Not crazy about their defense this year, but that is not the topic at hand. Stinson has improved incredibly since last year and the receiving core is just absolutely loaded with speed and size. As far as the running game, Mayfield has maybe had better backs but Matthews has more homerun potential than any running back Mayfield has had in many years. He can change direction or make a move on the defender while running full speed which is very rare at this level. Overall this offense just has no weakness. Unfortunately it's the other side of the ball that scares me when it comes to that Semifinal trip to Lousiville the day after Thanksgiving
