Hospitality - How well does your school treat the Press?

Featured Replies

I just read a nice article in the local paper, written by the sports beat writer and he was praising Belfry High for the impressive way they treat members of the press when covering a game at CAM Stadium.

I know also at Belfry, nobody is allowed on the playing field except team personnel and press. Press passes are issued at each game and if you don't have a pass, you don't get on field level. I think it is a safety measure and also adds a bit of professionalism.

All this made me wonder what is typical treatment for members of the press at other venues in the state.

What perks do they get and how well are they taken care of at most schools? How much information do they have preprinted for them and how much do they have to get on their own?

Please don't use this as a stump to bash specific schools, but if you know how your school treats the press, please share. And if you are a member of the press, how do get treated and where do you like to go? What would you like more schools to do for you?

Anybody?

At Lex.ChristianAcademy we do the following things:

1. FREE MEAL PASS to all Media

2. PRESS PASS to FIELD

3. Send BOTH Team Rosters week of the game via email

4. Distribute hard-copies of Rosters at the game to Media personnel

5. Escort the Media to/from the field and treat them with great respect

6. Email ALL STATS within 5 minutes of the end of the game - every game

7. Communicate Season-to-date Stats weekly

we figure we need to help them give us "coverage" any way we can - especially in Lexington where we compete with all the 3A & 4A power schools and we are just a little 1A school... :jump:

I guess we are a little lacking at Manual,

We do provide rosters, stats at halftime and after game, and I get them bottled water along with our coaches in the box, and film guys.

Where I've been that provides similar perks:

Trinity - you have to have a pass to even get in the visitors box, but the guy working the door is very friendly and had a cooler stocked with drinks. Their security is similar to Belfry's.

Meade County - group of Moms comes in before game and at halftime with drinks and even hotdogs, and other sandwiches

Henderson does not even talk to WSON (30 years of covering the Cols) anymore because Duffer said a bad word on air :sssh: . The radio station decided not to do Duffers pregame and weekly interviews. The team(players) later voted not to talk to WSON period. This would have seemed crazy to me at one time. Not anymore.

Not a good working realtionship in Pendleton County..as far as football goes. The local paper has reporters, but if a coach wants a good story, they pretty much have to give the details they want printed. All other sports seems to have a good rapport with the paper. Football, however, has had minimal coverage due to the fact that the coaching staff has refused to provide stats and other basic info for the paper. The only people hurting are the athletes and their families.

Here at Mayfield the school does a very good job of taking care of the press and media. There is always lots of free water, soft drinks, coffee when it is hot, and before the game starts there is tons of free pizzas brought up to the press box for media, coaches, clockkeeper, PA announcer, and filmers to enjoy. Graves County also does something similar when they have the field...other than those two we have yet to find anything that comes close in this end of the state that even compares...most places don;t even offer bottled water to us poor media personnel.

I echo the sentiments about Mayfield, and that includes visiting media.:thumb: Bardstown should be the same if Mayfield is traveling up here for semi-state this year, God willin'!

As you stated God willin'...I will be looking forward to seeing the hospitality of Bardstown...good luck to the Tigers in their upcoming playoff games.

PC coaching staff: Don't worry about people (probably parents) that don't know what they're talking about. The people that matter know you guys are working hard to get things turned around and we think you are doing a great job!!

Not a parent of a player...and I DO know what I'm talking about since I know who submits the necessary information, what little there was, for the football team. Other coaches submit information, email it to the editors, and get it there on time. Again, this isn't to bash a particular school or team, only stating the facts that the media has not received a warm welcome this year at PC.

I could really get myself in trouble in this thread...
