We have used this in our frosh/JV conference for over 10 years. The format was driven by the need to protect our kids and get them home at a decent time on a school night (Monday) .

 

If there is a tie at the end of regulation, we have a coin toss for a 2 point play. The winner of the toss can choose offense or defense. Loser chooses end of the field.

 

If the offense scores, that team wins the game. If they do not score, the team on defense wins the game. The tie is broken on one play.

 

Sounds radical... but no more radical than eliminating kick off.

 

For frosh/JV games it has worked very well. Does it have a place in HS Varsity games, college, or the NFL? Thoughts?

I don't like it on any level from high school on up.

 

I would be ok with requiring teams to go for 2 points if they score a touchdown in overtime. Each team gets a possession and if they score a TD, they must go for 2.

I think that is a cheap way to decide a winner. I would prefer it being a tie over deciding a winner on one play.

 

I like the idea of having to go for 2 after a td, though many Jv/Frosh teams may go for two all the time anyway.

Play until you are done, simple as that. Each team gets the ball at least onece.

Consistency is my concern. Play by KY High School rules if it is a high school game (freshman and JV is still hs). I think the bigger issue is a district deviating from KHSAA rules.

College football rules are the best and most effective.

Unique idea. At first blush I think I like it for freshman and JV games where participation and reps are (or should be) the main objective. There is no playoffs at stake, and we are too wrapped up in winning and records as it is.

 

I don't think it has a place in varsity, or any level where wins and losses have an impact on post season play.

 

What has the reaction been to this method? I can imagine that implementation could be HUGELY unpopular among the fans, and probably the players too.

I'm normally pretty open to change, but I wouldn't be a fan of this. I hate to see each team not get a chance to run offense. I'd rather see a tie than have a game decided using this method.
