October 24, 20187 yr Yes, I was using a muzzle loader. I was using a CVA. If I were buying right now, I'd by a Traditions BuckStalker probably. My only recommendations would be, don't break the bank, and always clean it good. Make sure it uses 209 primers. (most do) There are usually good sales in September. I would suggest you get one with a longer barrel for greater long range accuracy. Also, get one that breaks down to insert the primer, not an inline model. CVA or Traditions is a good choice.
October 24, 20187 yr Got to my spot at 7:10 Saturday morning. 7:20 the hunt was over. What county did you take this buck?
October 24, 20187 yr Author man I’ve had some highs and lows the last couple days in my tree stand. On Sunday evening, I had probably 10 deer at different times work through the area. The wind was light, and I guess it was swirling, because I was blown at twice. Later on I took a shot at a doe who was broadside and missed. I thought I had ranged the tree she was next to at 30 yards, turns out she was at 40. I was super bummed after that sit, but decided to go out the next evening to the same tree. On Monday, the wind was blowing harder, so I knew I probably wouldn’t get blown at from the direction the deer always come up. Only problem was, the wind was gusting up to 20 or so mph, and my tree was swaying. I was actually feeling dejected and was considering moving or even going home. Next thing I knew, I caught movement in the cedars down the hill a ways. It was a small buck working up the hill, right to my stand. I mean, it was within 10 yards of my tree for about 15 minutes. I took a couple videos and pictures of him with my phone, and even had enough time to text my wife and good buddy(I sent them his picture and asked if they thought I should shoot him). Anyways, I told myself that I would take just about any buck beyond a spike with my bow, so ultimately I decided to let one fly. Well, by the time I could come to full draw with Out him busting me he was quartering pretty hard. I let the arrow fly when he was probably 15 yards away. I could tell that the entry was further back than I liked right away but My arrow passed through, he death kicked and ran off. I had the shakes pretty bad, and was super pumped because I thought I had heard him crashing. I waited 30 minutes and got the arrow... dark blood. Not the kind you want to see. I looked around for blood, and there was next to nothing. I knew it was a bad idea, but I walked over to where he ran off to see if I could find him... and boy did I find him. He was still alive about 50 yards or so away. He stood up, but luckily went right back down. He was hit pretty hard and labored a great deal to get up. I literally froze. I stood there for a good half hour, not really sure what to do. I could see him looking around, panting pretty heavy. I didn’t want to approach because I figured he’d have enough adrenaline to run again. I stayed until dark. Actually, I knew I’d have to get out of there, because I wouldn’t have been able to tell if he was alive or dead when it was dark anyways. So I slowly backed out and went home. The next morning I went in, and thankfully found him right where I left him. I started to drag him, but after maybe 25 yards I said screw it. I quartered him right there and packed him into a cooler. Even that had me sore. Definitely an experience I’ll remember if nothing else.
October 24, 20187 yr Author This thing looks pretty cool, but I’ll never ever euro mount a deer again using this method. It was a pain to say the least. I might do the burying method and let the beetles do their thing.
October 25, 20187 yr Congrats to both you guys who bagged a deer! I still chose not to shoot the small doe who keeps coming around the feeder nearly every time I’m in the blind. I hope she drags something else with her one day. Heck, the night before I was there last week, it was a deer party at the feeder with about 6 deer (some nice does) from 6:00 to after 7:00 at night.
October 26, 20187 yr Author So I’ve had my buck on ice since Tuesday and am going to cut him up today. I’m going to keep the back straps and the tenderloins as steaks, then I’m going to grind the rest. I might change my mind and keep a couple roasts, we’ll see. I’m actually wanting to make some breakfast sausage and possibly goetta with the buck. I’m excited to see how this goes!
October 26, 20187 yr Gotta keep a couple roasts and put it in a crockpot with some taters and carrots . Come home to that after it cooking all day . That’s eating right there .

We used to grind up most of ours but recently have been doing a lot of chops/steaks. The breakfast sausage is very expensive to make. Had some chops the other night we used in a stew. Soaked them in milk over night and couldn't tell the difference between them and the beef in the pot.

I’ve soaked in buttermilk and then rinsed it off before grilling and you could have thought it was beef when you ate it.
October 27, 20187 yr Milk or buttermilk? I’ve soaked in buttermilk and then rinsed it off before grilling and you could have thought it was beef when you ate it. The regular 2% milk we use at the house.
