Belfry doesn't believe in cupcakes to start a season. They will open their season this week in the Pike County Bowl facing the pre-season #4 in West Virginia's largest division, Huntington High. Huntington has plenty in the cupboard, especially at the tackle position boasting two of the top tackles in the state. 4-star 6'6" 320 Darnell Wright holds down one end while 2 star 6'4" 290 Max Howell is on the other side.

Huntington is big and they’re usually really good but Kentucky high school football is so much better than West Virginia I think Belfry avenges last seasons loss and wins this one.

The top schools in WV's large class are usually really good, most 6A teams in KY would have a hard time beating them. I would be surprised if Belfry doesn't get blown out in this one, given that they will be missing some key players.

Belfry has some injury issues, not what you want against a team as big and talented as Huntington.

The Highlanders are anchored by the #2 overall player in the Country who dominates both sides of the ball and have a few more guys who I would expect to be seeing on Saturdays once they graduate.

Last year Belfry had a nice lead but Huntington came from behind to win.

I would lean with HHS by 2 TD's

The comparison I would use for HHS is Frederick Douglass with an All-American. They would be a 6A school in KY and have a ton of athleticism.

Who is Belfry missing? I didn’t know they had any players out. I know Huntington is good but WV football doesn’t compare to KY football as a whole. And I know you can’t look too much into a scrimmage but Johnson Central beat Huntington by 7 a couple weeks ago in a scrimmage.

They're missing several starters, I'll leave it at that. Someone else can name the players if they wish. As far as WV football goes, HHS would likely be a team in the 5-7 range in 6A in Kentucky. So it's not a stretch to think they would beat Belfry even if the Pirates were at full strength.

I’m not saying I think Belfry is way better than Huntington. I won’t be surprised if HHS win but I’m pulling for Belfry and I think they have a good chance to win this game, or at least I did... if they’re missing multiple key players then that changes things.

I'm pulling for Belfry as well, I'm just being honest when I say that HHS is the better team, even if everyone is healthy. The top tier teams in WV are likely better than you believe they are.

I’m also not saying the best teams in West Virginia aren’t good. I’m saying they aren’t on the level of Trinity, St. X, or Male. Was anybody at the Johnson Central/Huntington scrimmage that has some insight of how they looked in person?

Why the secrecy on the injuries?

HHS wins this one but I am cheering for Belfry.

Belfry will have a really tough uphill battle in this one. With key injuries, inexperience in the secondary and a HUGE Huntington team, the Pirates will be a heavy underdog, IMO.

One observer described HHS's size as "bigger than Belfry was in 2015 and 2016, and talented"

Thanks for the input but I have faith in the Pirates.

If Belfry loses then they lose....in game 1. Their concern is being healthy for district to secure home field advantage in the region. Pond Creek ain't no place you want to be looking for a W in November.
