Was it the Camels playing really well or the Colonels playing poorly? Or a combo of the two? Is the Camel QB elusive?

 

It was probably a combination of both. It’s still early and both teams need to work on some things. Dixie had problems moving the ball against Cooper in their scrimmage and that didn’t change much against the Camels. The Camels have the personnel to be the best defense in NKY 6A. This should help an offense with a new QB and RB. Andrew Helton has a chance to make a name for himself. He throws bullets at times and needs to grow more confident each week. If he can progress like he’s capable, CC’s offense will follow. He’s got weapons and new Offensive Coordinator Styer loves to throw the ball. Helton is in good hands.

 

Overall, the new staff has made a quick impact on the players and you can see it already. Schemes are much different this year and the kids have bought in.

Another in a VERY long line of disappointing drubbings for Coach Brossart. The few left that support the regime can list all the usual excuses, but the reality is there needs to be a change.

 

How long has it been since the Colonels have been legitimate threats to any top local teams? Now they’re getting embarrassed on a fairly top regular basis.

1 - Scott's football program has vastly improved over the last 5 years. Simon Kenton football is vastly improved from 15 years ago. Kenton County Schools have open enrollment. If I'm a kid who plays football, I want to go to Scott or Simon Kenton LONG before I want to go to Dixie.

 

2 - Covington Catholic and Beechwood are both within a 5 mile drive, and are much more promising opportunities for a winning season and maybe a state championship.

 

3 - Middle school football and Covington Catholic's Colonel Youth Football essentially did in the Dixie Raiders and forced them to close up shop. The Raiders were the defacto feeder system for the Dixie Heights football program, and they're no more.

 

4 - Parents are more willing than they used to be to pay to send their kids to other schools for athletic purposes.

In his 6 years as Scott’s head coach, Dan Wooley has led the Eagles to 38 wins. You would have to tally wins back over the course of more than fifteen seasons to find 38 total wins prior to Wooley taking over the program.

 

 

I said Scott's football program is vastly improved, and I'd call that pretty vastly improved. In that same 6 year time period, which is the entirety of Coach Brossart's tenure as head coach, Dixie has had 36 wins - although it's definitely worth noting the trip to the 6A finals in 2014. I didn't necessarily mean that kids are looking for a "football future" with Scott, but when there's open enrollment in Kenton County, I would say at the very least that I don't think Dixie's football program is drawing anyone away from deciding to go to Scott like it may well have done in the past.

I'm assuming you're saying that you think Dixie needs to look at other options for head coaching? I think if you look at things on the whole, the overall success of athletic programs as far as competitiveness for state championships is not a huge priority for Kenton County Public Schools. I'm not going to go through and look at all sports across the board for the last 15 or 20 years, but aside from Simon Kenton's football, baseball and softball teams, and in more recent years Scott's boy's basketball team, I don't know that there have been many athletic teams out of Kenton County Public Schools that have made much of a splash on a state wide level.

 

I don't know how many NKY coaches have been handed marching papers in the last 20 years or so compared to how many NKY coaches resigning on their own accord, but things have been rough for quite a few football teams in NKY for a decently long while...Bellevue, Dayton, Holmes, Newport...Scott, Lloyd and Ludlow have only recently had upticks in the last 5 or so years.

Dixie plays Scott on Friday night. This will be a key game for both squads. Dixie has some size on the roster but it seemed that a lot of them were on the sidelines.

Dixie’s biggest issue is a lack of a feeder program. They’re the only larger school in NKY without a direct feeder team. Kids are spread across Lions, Spartans, Bengal Tigers, and South Kenton. Not only do feeder teams help develop the kids for your program, but they help setup a sense of pride for the school. Kids and parents want to stick together and play for the high school. Dixie doesn’t have that.

While true, the this is the 3rd year the Raiders have been gone, and Turkeyfoot MS still has a program, that played for a championship 2 years ago. The demise of the Raiders won’t be felt for a few more years.

From a player standpoint, you’re correct. However, I think there’s more to it than just that.
