I agree with congratulating GRC with no strings attached if they indeed win it. Do the same with PC for 05. I assure you PC congratulated GRC after the defeat last year despite having two "transfers" in the lineup. Brossart should have a tough team this year no doubt. They may even win it as well. IF they do I will congratulate you Mustang with no strings attached, even though every player and student in your building is recruited because again that is what private schools have to do to compete. not just for basketball but for survival. Jog your memory a little further back to 04 MCIT PC beat Brossart 69-62 without Elliott and Brossart had Rhoden who I believe was 7' tall.

Maybe if Rhoden would have gone to CCHS a smart coach would have played around him and they could have won a region title. instead Rhoden played the bench, and BBHS lost to bracken. He didnt play one minute??? Why???

Ouch Whodey! I can hear the big green machine groaning on that one.

I think Willie has more than proved himself as a good coach. However, Rhoden should have played more and had a bigger role when he played.

Rhoden had scored at will against Bracken County in their first encounter back in the "A" title game and would have undoubtedly done the same in the district game - they had no answer for him.

Derrick Rhoden is a great kid, he's a friend of mine to this day. I've taken him fishing in Canada on a couple of occasions and we just went to Keeneland a week or so ago. But if I were Willie I wouldn't have played him a minute in the Bracken County game either.

When he was a freshman, he was a phenom - tall, smooth, intelligent, coordinated ...... He was happy and making second honors. The world was his oyster.

I watch those highlight tapes and want to cry - he might have been the greatest player ever to come out of NoKy - he was THAT good.

Tragically, just before his sophomore season something happened. We'll leave it at that, that caused him to become a whole different kind of player. Slow, sluggish, heavy, surly replaced his former positive attributes. When he came back at mid-season, in his mind he was the same player with the same moves and abilities but he never was again - not even close.

It seemed like from that time on it was a constant struggle to get him to practice hard or make a positive contribution to the team effort. Occassionally he would show signs of his old self. Against Campbell County and Newport Catholic (in the "A" State) during his senior year he was brilliant, but we still had to deal with his practice demeanor and his game efforts, and his performance against those teams were the exception rather than the rule. He refused to play according to the script and constantly tried one on one moves, putting the ball on the floor, failing to kick it out - and became a liability in games rather than an asset.

The day before the Bracken game, in what was the continuation of an ongoing battle between he and the coaching staff, Derrick refused to "wear white" (play defense against the first string) because he took that as an insult instead of understanding that he wasn't going to play 32 minutes and the other guys often had to play without him. He totally refused to practice at all and leaned against the pushed-in stands for the duration of that practice. Coach Schlarman, Coach Rowe and myself tried to talk to him, reason with him, and explain to him. But unfortunately on that day, it came to a head and because of his actions wasn't played in the fateful Bracken County game.

The Polar Bears, with a great game plan dictated a very S-L-O-W tempo, packed it in against McDole and challenged the Mustang shooters who couldn't throw it in the ocean that night, keeping the game close, and were able to win it 31-30. The Mustangs were the "A" Runners-up that year, had beaten Highlands just a week or two before the district, Owensboro by 15 in the Rupp Classic at LexCath a week before the tournament, and Simon Kenton by 36 just days before the "game that will live in infamy."

We finished the season 23-6 that year.

Our coaches weren't stupid, they were stalwart in dealing with an impossible situation, and unfortunately it found its way to the game floor and the upstart Polar Bears pulled one of the biggest upsets in recent history.

And now you know the rest of the story..................

I think it should be left alone now as Mustang generously give the reasoning why.Sounds the coach's had to do what needed to be done i applaud them.

I have no beef with that game or those reasons. I thought he should have played more the entire season. I've played with and against him several times and I understood how he could be a liability. I remember passing it to the post to him and you had to hit his hand. He was phenomenal as a freshman though and I thought he was going to be incredible. Coach Schlarman was a heck of a coach and I always thought he was a heck of a guy.

Mustang is correct when he talks about how Rhoden used to be "tall, smooth, intelligent, and coordinated." I played middle school AAU with Derrick and he would just flat out dominate games. He was easily our "go to" player. I think he even shot our free throws for technical fouls. It's a shame that things like that have to happen.

Very true, I saw him dominate the "Rhino" (Kevin Reinhardt now @ Georgetown) in Rhoden's freshman season (junior season for Reinhardt). He could have been great!!! But like many on here (BGP) say, "coulda, woulda, shoulda". Things just didn't work out for him. He is still a very happy kid to be around. I can still remember being on the varsity team at Brossart and Rhoden was an eight grader and he was shooting 3's and filling it up too, beleive me, noone saw the true Derrick Rhoden.

Having 2 kids that can play for Mason's Middle School team can't possibly impress anyone. -- I am a fan

Going to respond to the comments regarding The King twins, Mason Co, etc...

Who cares if they could play there...They never will because they will stay and graduate from Deming. They will play some JV and Varsity this year at Deming, but don't expect great things as eighth graders....Deming's eighth grade team is 2-0 to this point....60-30 over Augusta and 78-36 over Williamstown...The eighth grade team plays in a showcase tournament this weekend at Bracken County and will play Mason (the team that they lost a close game to in the 8th grade state tourney, last year) IamFAn should see them play before making any predictions....Mason will beat CCHS and CCHS will likely beat Deming and Augusta, although they may be a bit overated..Just my opinion..Coach Reitz is a good coach, so I could be wrong...

I think GRC and Mason are legit top 10 teams. I guess I gotta give a very slight edge to Mason because the teams are almost the same and Mason won the game last year (of course it wasn't on a neutral court, but that is irrelevant, lol.)

Anyway I would say Knowles should be a mr. b-ball candidate. He is legit.

Mason will have there share of Mr. b-ball candidates with Miller next year and possibly Middleton after that if he continues to improve.

I am looking forward to the Montgomery-Clark showdown, maybe they will pick up where the playoff football game left off.

I dread every time we play Montgomery Co....in any sport. We could be ahead by 50 points and MC will fight and claw their way right back into the game. I will give it to the players at MC they never give up.:thumb: Mark on your calandar DEC15th MC plays at GRC. FEB 19th GRC will get the chance to play in MC's new gym.

MC is the team that will flying under the radar this year in the 10th region....:sssh:

I should see 8th graders play so I can predict what? What did I predict about 8th graders?

Heard recently that Clark may have lost Rogers.

Any information on this?
