April 18, 20188 yr Nothing good in legalizing it except revenue for the government. As bad for your health as cigarettes. As bad a drug as alcohol. But both of those are legal. So I say legalize it and tax the snot out of it to cover all those added health costs and loss of lives that will come from legalizing it.

April 18, 20188 yr I do think it is a gateway drug. Do you think anyone that has done Heroin has never done pot? My guess is the % is very high of it being a gateway. I do know there are many that like an occasional joint and don't get hooked. Plus I still have concerns of how we gauge/test just how high someone is. Do you think people would still try Heroin if marijuana didn't exist? There are far far more people who try marijuana that never touch any other kind of drug. There will always be the personality types that have to push further and will try harder drugs, but that is going to happen regardless unless you get rid of drugs altogether.

Not going to say it's as bad as cigarettes but inhaling fumes from any burning substance is not good for you. To say nothing good in legalizing it is ignorant. To say it's as bad a drug as alcohol is wrong and also assumes alcohol is bad. What most assume any one that uses marijuana or alcohol abuse it. The abuse of it is bad but not the substances themselves.

I do know there are many that like an occasional joint and don't get hooked. Plus I still have concerns of how we gauge/test just how high someone is. That is such flawed logic. Sure, most heroin addicts have tried marijuana prior to heroin, but in most instances they've also relied heavily on nicotine and/or alcohol. There is nothing in particular about marijuana that promotes the use of other drugs. The reality is that the majority of marijuana users do NOT go on to more hardcore drugs.
April 18, 20188 yr I'd agree with MJ that alcohol is a much more dangerous gateway drug than weed. I'm guessing an even higher % drink and do heroin than weed and Heroin. But I disagree that it is a greater gateway. Much lower % drink and go to Heroin than smoke weed and go to Heroin. Or do you disagree to that statement?

How about the medicinal benefits for terminally ill patients? How about the medicinal benefit for those who suffer from Parkinsons, epilepsy or seizures? How about reducing the stress on the overcrowded prisons? How about the government overseeing the production & distribution of marijuana so the consumer knows exactly what they're getting instead of relying on the black market? How about eliminating the black market entirely, thereby reducing one's exposure to other illicit drugs?
April 18, 20188 yr I'd say they still would try it, but not as many. Would more or less people smoke pot if it were legal? More, no doubt. But again, you are assume smoking it is the only option. I think more people would use marijuana products if it were legal. I don't necessarily think a ton more would smoke it. If you believe it is truly a gateway drug, has Colorado's drug problem increased since legalizing it?

I always find it comical that we don't seem to have any problems handing out opioid like candy but heaven forbid we allow the use of marijuana.
April 18, 20188 yr Amen Pot is less harmful than pain pills. I would rather someone drive high than drive on pain pills. I can assure you that pot is a 100% gateway drug.
April 18, 20188 yr Do you have links to studies and research that back up it's as bad as cigarettes? In the past couple of weeks there was a study that I heard about on the radio that said the tar and nicotine and cancer-causing agents generated from smoking marijuana was worse than cigarettes. I don't have a link as it was something I heard on the radio but will try to find something tonight.
April 18, 20188 yr Absolutely in favor of legalization. I used to be totally against it until I actually did the research on it when teaching a unit on drugs in Forensic Science. My eyes were very much opened.

My eyes were very much opened. That's awesome, TB&J. I think far too many that oppose the legalization of marijuana know very little about it, except the two most common stereotypes: gateway drug & burnout losers eating bags of Doritos in mom & dad's basement.

I don't know many people that would be able to smoke 2 packs of marijuana a day.
