Very few, and there is no correlation at all to NCAA tournament success and playing true road games. I would love to see it more, no doubt, but I am also realistic in knowing why it doesn't happen.

 

Exactly. Next year they play Duke, UNC, UL,and and a big 12 team. So home, away, neutral either way games like that is preparing them. More so than a lot of teams non conference schedules.

How many true scheduled road games in non conference does Duke, UNC, Kansas, etc play? Obviously all those teams including UK play a true road game every other year in the ACC/Big 10 challenge and the Sec/Big 12 challenge. But besides those games what all true road non conference games do those teams play? UK also every other year has a true road game at UL. So compared to the other top programs, how many true road non conference games do these other top programs play? You would think they play a lot with how much talk you all have done recently in saying UK needs more true road games in non conference.

So Kentucky played 10 true road games this year and UNC played 12. Does anyone really think there's much value gained by those additional 2 games?

I understand why Calipari doesn't do it, but I do like the home-and-homes. It isn't really relevant for this thread or the Kentucky program but I also liked what Dean Smith used to also do where they'd play a road game in the home town (or as close as possible) of senior players.

Son just got a text from his coach that Penny has scheduled Christian brothers University for a pre season scrimmage again. It was dropped after CBU beat them 4 years ago. Tubby added them back on after a years absence.

They may need to wait a year or two to get UK home and away.

I remember when it was called Memphis state.

Memphis schedules CBU just as UK schedules Transy except CBU is a competitive Div. II program. I am sure it is a thrill for CBU to play in the FedEx Forum against UM.

 

UK and Memphis both would be expected to have a some new players next year, and whatever happened four years ago is irrelevant.

 

Memphis has a challenge because the "powers that be" have decided that the same conferences that are power conferences in football are power conferences in basketball...SEC had 8 teams in and the ACC had 9. Neither did nearly as well as the Big 10 or Big 12. So, maybe the SEC was over-rated, and UK would have benefitted by more out-of-league tests. UK lost to Indiana in fall of 2011 and went on to avenge the loss in the NCAA tourney and win the title in 2012. Of course, there is no way of knowing, but the loss could have been at least some of the experience needed to get through the tourney.

Ky rebuilds every year. I think it will take a few years for a coach to get Memphis back on the map. Why would Ky want to waste a game on team that would mean nothing on the schedule? As zero power said, nothing to gain and too much to lose.

Cal can only lose from this. If Penny is up an coming and pulls off a Bruce Weber, that could hurt recruiting.
