Conference Tournaments...What's your solution?

Featured Replies

College football season regular season better. How college basketball crowns a champ and how it's determined on the court and not by simple opinion is 10 times better.
I’ll give you that. March is fantastic, but the rest of the season is ehh.

Just take the top 4 and have a tournament.

For 1 bid conferences this could be a good solution. That way you are guaranteed to get one of your top teams in.

It’s all about the NCAA tournament. What makes the NCAA tournament so great is the upsets. It becomes infinitely harder to get some of those upsets when the best teams from small conferences get upset in their conference tourney. NKU could have definitely upset a team in the tournament this year. It’s a shame that it’s not able to happen.

Regular season champ either gets auto bid to big dance or a slot in the conference tourney final, with the winner getting the automatic bid to the big dance.

At the end of the day as much as it sucks this year. Not many people seemed to have a problem with it last year when NKU benefited from the conference tourny. If they change it. Then NKU doesn't get that incredible run and experience they had to make the big dance last year.

To some extent, you are correct. However, I would have been more than happy to see last year's run end with an NIT bid. "March Madness" begins with the conference tournaments, so it will likely never change.

If you watch ESPN or CBS, when discussing teams from major conferences the narrative usually is they don’t place much weight on a team making a good conference tournament run. They look at the season as a whole when looking at bubble teams. So if the committee doesnt value conference tournaments, why do some of you all as fans put such a large weight on it? Like if Cleveland State makes a run and wins the Horizon league, that doesn’t change anything. They are still a bad team that put together a couple good games. Basketball is a sport where the best team doesn’t always win. Yeah it’s fun because every game could be a 1 game sample size, but there should be some reward for consistency and simply being a better team the whole year. You all love upsets in the tournament right? Well which team in the Horizon league would have the best chance to upset a high seed in the tournament? It’s NKU no question.

Maybe not 4 but I do like the idea of 8 for a league like the Horizon. That way everyone plays 3 games. I think the idea of a bye or double bye has had the opposite of the desired affect in letting the lower seed get a warm up game, get settled into the arena, and get hot or on a roll by winning a game or two.

Also, thinking about this a little, why not let the #1 and #2 play the bottom seeds instead of letting a middle seed get warm while beating them? In the 10-team Horizon, 1 vs. 10, 2 vs 9 with winners into the semis. 5 vs 8 and 6 vs 7 on opening night, with the winners playing the 3 and 4 to get into the semis.

Regular season = NCAA

Conference tournament = NIT

NCAA rules say that if a conference has a tournament the auto bid goes to the tourney champ.

Oakland...

It's not really broken, no reason to come up with convoluted fixes.

Every year there is a team left out that an argument can be made deserves to be in. If they had taken care of business they would have made it on their own accord.

Yeah, at 100% I would agree but they're still down 2 starters.

I think a lot people feel that it is broken. Hits home because it's NKU but a lot of people dislike the conference tournaments.

Oakland...

You watch more Horizon League ball than I do so I’ll take your word on that.

NCAA rules. That is funny.
