Conference Tournaments...What's your solution?

Featured Replies

So far 4 of the mid-lower level conferences have completed their conference tournaments.

3 of the 4 champions were the regular season champs. In the one that wasn't it was the #2 seed upsetting the #1 in the finals.

Typically, the top team wins the conference tournament in most of these conferences. It sucks that NKU couldn't get the job done, but at the end of the day that's how it is. It benefited them last year, hurt them this year. No need for a change IMO.

OVC and MVC were on neutral courts.

A-Sun the #1 seed FGCU lost on their home court.

Radford won the Big South on their home court on a buzzer beater.

Nothing will happen. But I think there is a discussion to be had about what the mid and small major conferences should do to send their best teams and what is best for them.

If it's a big enough issue for them then they need to stop having a conference tournament.

Oakland is 18-13, 10-8 in conference. They've lost to IUPUI and Youngstown State in the last month. They are not the same team they were in December or January. If they are a .500 team against the Horizon in the last month, they have little to no chance of beating a top 3 seed. NKU and Wright State are just much better teams right now. Yes, Nunn can "win a game by himself" but that is much more difficult when you have no one else around you, as the last month has shown. Check his and Oakland's scoring and shooting in the last month. Different team. Not as good. Not as dangerous.

And still more likely to pull that upset than NKU and Wright State, who in the past 10 days have lost to IUPUI and Cleveland State at full strength. You not liking my answer doesn't change the reality of what I'm saying...

Yeah, you're probably right. Oakland looked really good tonight.

Lost by 1. How many did NKU win by the other night? The Horizon was really down this year, NKU and Wright St included. The realistic chances of anyone in the league winning a 1st round game rated somewhere closer to none than slim. Oakland had by far the top high end guard to make a very unlikely upset happen. NKU and Oakland are out, so those chances are now even lower. So 1% is now 0.025%. OUTRAGE!!! :lol2:

Oakland is a average team in a below average conference. They lost 14 games and 6 of their last 11. They would have had no chance of beating a 2 seed. NKU would have had a punchers chance of beating a 3 seed, same as Wright State might. Neither would have a great chance of beating a 2 seed but I think they would be competitive--like NKU against UK last year. Answer one question: did you see Oakland play tonight?

Nope. Had to work a 15 hour day doing UC coverage from the AAC title to the opening of Spring Football. I did see NKU give up 80 points to Cleveland St in 30 minutes the other day. I checked in on Wright State losing to IUPUI with a chance to clinch the #1 seed for most of the game. Nothing about either of those results says they are anywhere close to beating a 2 or 3 seed. Same as Oakland. Only difference is Oakland has the most high end player in the league, which is needed to not only hang around, but actually beat a 2 or 3 seed.

It won't matter who wins the Horizon. Teams eliminated already included. Cash the tournament share, and keep it moving to next year. That's life in the Horizon. Some years you have a team ready to pick someone off. Some years you don't...

NKU was in line for a 14 seed but ran into a team that was on fire for 30 minutes. The 14's have done pretty well in the last 5 years. So, as I said, a punchers chance. Nunn is a great scorer but Oakland is terrible right now. Depending on the match-up, Wright State could be a big headache for a 2 or 3 seed.

Not sending your best team to the NCAA, having a great regular season mean nothing, being rewarded with a #1 seed but seeing no benefit in that, etc.

Are you really the best team in the league if you can’t beat the bad teams in the tourney to make it to the NCAA? They seed the tourneys to give the 1 seed the best seed, that’s part of the reason they play the regular season to earn the path of least resistance.

Yes, you are. Upsets happen. I'll take an 18-game sample over a one game sample. The path of least resistance is the issue I have. The 1 seed doesn't see much benefit in the Horizon.
