I wonder why someone hasn't started a football program at OBI if the right staff got in there it would be an immediate power. The school is located in Clay County and is a boarding school with dorms on campus, its more like a small college than a high school.

 

Wouldn't that be a coaches dream, all his football players living at school where you could plan practice and workouts whenever you wanted. Most of the kids there are from out of state. However there is nothing in Oneida Kentucky I mean Nothing maybe one small grocery.

 

If I had a bazillion dollars I'd hire me a staff, build a complex and create the Oak Hill of high school football.

I thought Oneida had a football team at one time back in the 80's.

I know they once had a basketball team, they still might, I am just not sure.

How do you figure to draw players if there is "nothing in Oneida?" I don't see teenagers lining up for that.

How do those teams do and who do they play?

They play all over and the Soccer does well as far as i know don't really keep up with soccer not my cup of tea. But they all ways put a competitive basketball team on the hard wood, I think they would be a very athletic football team. As for a power right away don't see that but it would be easy to build. Longest yard or grid iron gang 'not near the extent of that' but maybe these kids need the kind of discipline football brings in.

Just out curiosity is that school where kids are sent to for not behaving well.

Trust me, I live in Harlan and have been to Oneida. A lot more to do here in Harlan than Oneida.

Oneida (pronounced O-NEE-DA in Kentucky and O-NI-DA in Tennessee) is a very small community, probably not more than 100 people (not counting the school population). I suppose there's not much to do there, just like the small town I live in, which is 19 miles from Oneida. However, London is only a 35-40 minute drive from Oneida. That's probably where they go for shopping, dining, or movies. They're not that far away from things to do. They're not isolated.

I know they use to have a wrestling team, but not in the last few years...

OBI has several state titles in Fencing, before that sport was abolished by the KHSAA in the '70s.

 

On another note, the Mountaineers actually do have the means to be an Oak Hill-type powerhouse in basketball because they are a boarding school with dorms, but that's not their goal. Over the years I've asked many different OBI coaches and administrators did that thought ever enter their thinking, and all of them gave a similar answer..."no".
