Wasnt Jim Lokesak the star of that team? in 1975...

What about all the great Highlands teams? My mom has some old yearbooks from early 60's... I was looking at those...noticed some names like McGraw, Mike Lawson, Bill Montfort, Chuck Kyle, etc....She said they were some great teams and always went to state playoffs.

LN, maybe you can share some 1970's Bluebird history?

I'll let DMZ76 provide the commentary on the 75 championship team. When he tells the story we always end up sounding like we were much better than we actually were:banana: so I like his version much better.

Yes Jim Lokesak was the star of that team. He was excellent running back, but he had alot of help upfront.

I am waiting ....DMZ...where are you.... putting together your analaseeeeez?

Yep.. those were the teams I remember the most....watching Mike Sutkamp carry the ball like 40 times a game... I think he has the state record for most carries in a season or something...maybe career. I think Bellevue even knocked off Cov Cath back in 81' over at their place on a Saturday afternoon. Anybody remember that game?

I believe it was a Friday Night game. I went to it with my dad, and then went back to the Sutkamps house for a little after game party, as was the tradition back then. I clearly remember the post reading "Bellevue Bursts Covcath's Bubble 33-7" the following morning. I actually still have the clipping in a scrapbook someplace. I can remember thinking all those guys were the biggest things since sliced bread, being as how I was 9. My brother was a manager on those teams also along with the legendary Jeff James.

He has a national record for the most carries in a season. http://www.nflhs.com/news/records/11man_ind_rushing.asp

I stand corrected. You are correct about that being a national record:thumb: All those hits taken by Mike must not have gotten to him too much as he is an internal medicine doctor in Louisville now:thumb:

The '68 Bluebirds were a team to behold. Mike Murphy's first title team, known as "crew-cut-champions", they were little and quick, having only a single player weighing more than 200 lbs. In-the-huddle, out-of-the-huddle was the motto, they overwhelmed opponents. Three or four Division One players on the team lead by Tim Racke, All-American at Purdue and cut by the Chicago Bears. Closest game was 14 - 0 win over CovCath. Faced 100-man Bryan Station in round one, followed by Belfry and then E'town at Stoll Field. Trailed E'town early 7-6, the only time they trailed anyone all year. But in typical fashion, won by 6 or 7 TD's.

GRC won the 4A championship in 1991. Very hard to win the 4A with the Lousiville schools being so dominate of that crown.

I mean...this was one of the best runs in KY history...Clark County beat us then St. Xavier is back to back weeks.

I saw that excellent team! As I recall, they defeated T and X in succession (the X game was a thriller) to win the title. Whatever happened to the rb's on that team?

BTW, very good idea for a thread.

They both were....we ran out of time inside the ten trying for a potential tying TD.

Joe Micatrotto.

Good memory. X was stopped on the one yard line on the final play of the game, alsodriving for a tie. You can play a little football when you smack both of these Catholic powers on successive weekends. Trinity had a very good team that year, losing only once in regular season, the memorable 15-14 loss to Holy Cross. Clark County was deserving of the title that year.

Sounds like a fabulous team and all undersized. Any other names worth mentioning on that team....?
