Sheldon Clark 35 Belfry 29 (OT)

Featured Replies

I read it exactly that way o-line.

I think it means simply that only two teams can play each other at a time. So NONE of the games played between ANY TWO of the tied teams will count in the tie breaker calculations.

So you can't count Belfry vs SC or SC vs Pburg or Belfry vs Pburg.

Right, and "All games played shall be counted in applying the tie-breaking procedure....", and nowhere states to omit the games won by the tied teams(except those games played between any two of the tied teams), further confirming that wins of all the tied teams will be counted, except for the wins from "those games played between any two of the tied teams". And it does make sense since any of the teams tied should be rewarded for a defeat of any of those tied. I'm still assuming that no amendments have been added to the Handbook, and/or posted on the KSHAA website.

If the tie remains, each team tied for the position shall

receive one point for each game won by any four of

their defeated opponents in all games, except for the

games played between any two of the tied teams.

All games played shall be counted in applying the tiebreaking

procedure, including out of state games,

with the exception that a defeated school may be

counted only once in the procedure regardless of

the number of games played against that particular

school.

That means games played between any two teams involved in the tie-breaker process. That means games between Belfry and Sheldon Clark, Belfry and Prestonsburg, and Sheldon Clark and Prestonsburg do not county because they are all involved in the tie-breaker process. It's the same rule they have used for several years and it's the same way it's been calculated over the same time.

Who's on First?

I think I am finally seeing what o-line is saying.

Is the rule saying that Belfry can't use Prestonsburg or Sheldon Clark as one of their 4 teams?

Or is it saying they could use either of them, but wouldn't get a point for any win either of them might have against the other 2 teams they are tied with?

Sure, and the wins of the tied teams will count if used as one of the 4 defeated opponents by either of the tied teams. Otherwise, there would need to be no inclusion whatsoever to consider "games played between any two of the tied teams".

Yes, sometimes it takes me a while to spit it out!

Naturally!

OK, now that we know what you are saying I think I can answer it.

The rule, although written in an way that casts some doubt, is interpreted so that neither of the tied schools can use one of the other 2 as one of their 4 teams. Pburg can't use Belfry or SC, etc.

It has always been applied that way, and I'm sure that is how they intended the rule, although I know do see the point you are making.

A look at last years tie breaker results will show that to be true.

Well, for some reason, I started reading that last night and had a tough time initially, but finally came to the conclusion that what I believe they wanted to say either wasn't written that way or it was what was intended but it's been done wrong for so long they don't want to change it! :thumb: :sssh: :D

Wow! I was shocked to hear this score. Belfry is a good team.... I guess I over looked SC. Congrads to SC on a big win.

Sheldon Clark did exactly what they do best, were content to run right up the middle behind that big line and get 3-5 yard per play. Belfry did a pretty good job containing that for 3 quarters.

SC scored first on their first possession by using the majority of the first quarter doing the above and punching a score for a 7-0 lead.

Belfry got the ball and failed to score. A good punt put the ball fairly deep in SC territory. Belfry's defense held on 3 downs and the Cardinal snap went over the punters head and into the end zone for a safety, making the score 7-2.

Belfry received the kick and on that possession drove down for a score, but missed the extra point when Elkins pass sailed out of reach of the wide open receiver, leaving the score at 8-7.

This was the halftime score.

Belfry opened the 3rd period with 3 quick scores, taking a commanding 29-7 lead by about the 6 minute mark of the 3rd quarter. This was the do or die point for the Cardinals and you could sense them on the verge of being done. But somebody failed to tell the Cardinals it was time to quit.

Belfry's kickoff was returned back to the 10 yard line, after the Pirates had Dials hemmed up and failed to wrap up on their tackling. A couple of plays later and the lead was cut to 29-14.

From there on out it was a story of Big Mo being on the Cardinal sideline, Dials and company putting on a gritty and determined display and Belfry showing some dismal tackling. Several times the Pirates were wrapping up runners in the backfield, but not following through and letting them break free for big gains (and scores).

Uncharacteristically, Belfry's defense was worn down and very tired looking in the 4th quarter.

Kudos to Sheldon Clark Cardinals for showing great heart and doing all the right things to win this huge district game. As disappointed as I was in the loss, I was just as proud of the Cardinal kids and staff. Congratulations to Coach Hager and the whole program. Hopefully we will meet again before the season is over. You guys deserved the win and you earned it.

Nice post Toots

Something interesting if you are watching Sports Overtime.

SC got the drive of the night for their first drive which led to their first score. If you saw the completion to #5, where he was hit and fumbled the ball.

They said that he recovered that fumble, but actually the refs called him down on the play before the fumble. It is funny because he was stripped and continued running 3 yds downfield, and in no way could have been down.

Please don't mistake my comments as some excuse, it had nothing to do with the outcome of the game. Belfry overcame that and built up a big lead so it is irrelavent IMO. The loss is a result of Belfry laying down and allowing the very determined Cardinals back into the game.

I saw that live and I saw that on overtime :sssh: Everybody saw that  . I kind of disagree with it having nothing to do with the outcome of the game though. First let me say SC played an awesome game and came to win. And Belfry did lay down. Congrads SC :thumb: But I do think calls like that get to the boys AND that play did lead them to their first score. They won in OT by 1 TD. Sooo I dont know about that not affecting the outcome. But Belfry should have stayed on their toes a 3 touchdown lead is not a guarenteed win in the 3rd!

This might not be the best Belfry team in recent vintage, but why not play like it. I want to give credit to Sheldon Clark; They made plays when they had too.

That said, I think this WAS an upset. I think Sheldon Clark matches up well with Belfry, knows them well, and took advantage. I think Coach Haywood eagerly awaits another game, but has to adjust and make sure his kids understand just what kind of team they are playing.

Hopefully, Belfry will regroup, play well and get ready to avenge this loss. Sheldon Clark played this game to win. Hager called reverses, spread the field, and pull out every trick in the book. Frankly, I'm not sure he had to. I think SC just flat out was tougher than Belfry. I only listened to the game on radio but even from a PIRATE broadcast I heard a SC team whip Belfry up front.

I heard Joe Kinzer say once "I don't buy that the team who wants it more will win". Granted he said this when Belfry was up by a couple touchdowns, but I'm not so sure it was correct. 1) Belfry couldn't compete as hard as they tried on the LOS (if so, the Pirates are hurting) or 2) SC wanting it more, gained momentum, and took this game.

Regardless how you analyze this game, this was a HUGE victory for Shawn Hager and the Cards. Congrats guys! I just wish your shining moment didn't bring a black day for Pirate footaball.

That said.. The season is FAR from over! Wake up boys! If the members of the Pirate football team could look me in the eye and tell me they played their best, I can accept this game. I think the rematch will be different.

Nice post :thumb: I agree

Wow, if I remember correctly, Joe Kinzer predicted Belfry 48 SC 6..

This was a huge win for the Cards..

However, now that loss to P-Burg is really starting to hurt.

All we can hope for is P-Burg losing to Shelby Valley and/or Boyd beating Greenup and Knot beating Cawood.

LOL, Joe can get carried away, Most of us knew better than to listen to him. :D

In post 41, the assumptions I made included one more win each for Boyd and Knott.

If SV beats Prestonsburg, it would put SC in first place all by themselves.

If Newport Catholic and Pikeville lose a game or two the next two weeks and if Boyd and Knott do their part, this could be very interesting.

Very, very interesting..

I don't know if I see PBurg falling to SV, so I'm putting my faith in Boyd and Knot.

Personally I don't like putting our playoff positions in these teams, but nothing I can do about it..
