KHSAA District Championship Question

Featured Replies

Here's the email I sent and the response I received from Butch Cope and he CC: Julian Tackett on the reply.

due to the new format ...the in-district play ...district champions will be crowned Week #2 of the playoffs ....district "seeds" are established during the regular season ....1 through 4 ...as in other sports...

guys...th e OFFICIAL interpretation is this...(straight from KHSAA - Julian Tackett):

1. 2nd round playoff winner is THE DISTRICT CHAMPION

2. DISTRICT games ONLY decide 1st round playoff seedings

any questions?

seriously, this is the RULE for 2006! MANY coaches were as surprised by all of this as all of us are right now!

Just try to get this message out to a couple hundred BGP Members. On almost every game thread I read, someone is talking about one of the final regular season games deciding the District Championship. Still clear as Mud to alot of people!!!

The Kentucky Standard in Bardstown has been billing the Bardstown-Bethlehem game for 3 weeks as "The District Title Match." I thought that was asinine since neither team had finished playing a reasonably competetive district schedule. This totally sticks that where the sun don't shine. I love it.

I believe this "blind" draw probably wasn't as "blind" as what they say. Sounds like an effort to get teams a little more geographically aligned,......as in Corbin playing in the east instead of the west.........

Coaches that say they were surprised by this 1) don't pay attention to the written information we all got from the KHSAA early in the summer and 2) don't pay attention at the annual meetings we all have to attend as coaches over the summer. A little more attention then and we wouldn't have confusion now.

How many #1 seed teams will claim to be "Regular Season District Champions" if they don't win that second round playoff game?

Seems fair to me.

Really, there are a lot of quirks to this playoff system. For example, Knox Central closes out the regular season at Rockcastle. Should they make the playoffs as a 4 seed and Rock as expected is the 1 seed, they travel right back the next weekend to play Rockcastle again. The reward for making the playoffs is consecutive weekends in Mount Vernon playing Rockcastle?:creepy:  Do they shoot the 5th place team?

Even that link is contradictory.

In part I)D)3) it indicates that the regular season winner is the district champion.

But later in part VIII)A)1) it indicates that trophies will be given to each district, region, semi state and runner up winner. Which, when taken in context, seems to say that the playoff winner of round 2 is the district champ.

An email to Mr Tackett should clear up the question.

This was brought up in another discussion by EagleEye & BigFig. Their post contained e-mail answers from the KHSAA. If you do a search you may find the answer.

Actually that was this thread, just a few posts above. :sssh: :D

I knew I saw it somewhere!! I should have followed my own advice. Time for lunch.

The KHSAA held a "blind" draw for the regional matchups, but only for regions 2 and 3 for this year.

They drew for the regional matchups for regions 2 and 3 in each class. 1A and 3A, the draw came out normal, 2A and 4A the draw came out different than normal.

This is the first year for this. Next year, and the year after, EVERY district will be involved in a rotating order of matchups for the regional championship.

See This Thread for a better description of that.

Looking at this link, the KHSAA really needs to rethink their plan and come up with something more equitable such as neutral site games for rounds 3 & 4. I know Ohio does this and West Virginia has a playoff set up that would work here for selecting sites, but something really should change.

How many #1 seed teams will claim to be "Regular Season District Champions" if they don't win that second round playoff game?

I see alot of teams claiming that distinction!!!
