Pikeville: 1A Sleeper?

Featured Replies

Pikeville should be looking at the Semi's if they remain dedicated to a good physical running game and not try to be too cute.

I like your choice of words!!!

I think that Pikeville should win there region but any farther than that i dont know. I believe they could possibly beat Beechwood but i dont see them being able to beat Danville. Pikeville should be considered a contender but I dont think that they will win it all.

Is Pikeville a sleeper contender for the 1A title?

The Panthers have lost three games, but those games were to:

4A Henry Clay- #4 in 4A, 8-0, and the Panthers played the Devils closer than quite a few Lexington 4A schools.

3A East Jessamine- The 5-2 Jaguars have lost only to 4A Henry Clay (see above) and 4A Woodford (5-2) who in turn have only been beaten by said Henry Clay and 8-0 4A Lafayette. The Panthers played the Jags very close on the road and many Panther fans felt should have upset them.

2A Belfry- #4 in 2A, 7-1. Panthers actually led the Pirates, who may very well be the best 2A team in the state in the 4th quarter. Belfry's only loss was to 7-1 3A Ashland in OT and the Pirates defeated the reigning 1A champs earlier this year. Many Pirate fans feel the best team they have faced this year has been Pikeville.

Take away the three losses to competition that is a combined 20-3 and the Panthers have outscored their opposition 187-26! They have a solid line, a stingy defense, and three outstanding runners.

Maybe you think they are a sleeper, maybe not, but at least we can see that this isn't your typical 4-3 1A team.

Correction: East Jessamine lost to Lexington Catholic and Woodford and dominated Pikeville until the East JV team went in.

Pikeville has beaten Somerset 2 out of the last 3 years. Two years ago Somerset came to Pikeville and got thrashed.
And why are the 2003 and 2004 games more relevant than last year's meeting? The logic escapes me ...

BTW, Somerset's wins have come against horrible teams, and Somerset's D has given up a zillion points.
And which good team has Pikeville beaten?
It will be almost impossible for Somerset to beat Pikeville at Pikeville

I'll just agree to disagree...Somerset will not come to Pikeville and win...end of story...
These comments could come back to haunt you ...

My recollection is that some of more vocal fans were trashing their offense after the East Jessamine loss. Didn't sound like the game was all that close.

Totally WRONG.:irked: I recollect that the fans were saying they didn't like the TYPE of offense that Pikeville was running. I think it is a far cry from "trashing their offense" Pikeville has always been a running-up-the-gut type of team. It's just that we, as fans, were not used to the type of offense that was being played. It also took the kids awhile to adjust to it, too.

This quote is also off. Nobody got "dominated" in that game. Come on, now!

I am a big admirer of Mike Jackson. However, Pikeville hasn't beaten anyone with a winning record yet. The Belfry game I'm sure gave the fans a sense of "moral victory," but I don't think Coach J, or anyone else on that team, is gonna count those. Hazard would be a good win, lets see if they do that before we start talking about Somerset, Beechwood, et. al.

We scrimaged Hazard and Pikeville will be fine their. Also in the game wtih East Jessamine Pikeville was playing their first complete game without my opinion the best player on their team and leader in offense especialy and great linebacker, John Mayo. The QB had to step in and adjust to everything Im sure Mayo had took most of the reps and practice at Qb in the preseason. Ill also say this from watching most all of Pikeville games on film up to the Belfry game I will say they improved alot each and every week and their improvement for the Belfry game was really good. They have a team and I will stand behind my word not many teams will come to Pikeville and beat them. Im saying they make it to Semis anyways and I wouldnt be a bit suprised to see them pull the shocker. Im still looking for the day when Belfry and Pikeville both goes together to state and we all can just cheer for each other. That would be so great.

If you had asked me, Zeus, I would have told you that is what I was referring to. Pikeville fans clearly, at that point, had yet to embrace Jackson's offensive scheme.

Nobody wants to heat this, but if Pikeville doesn't at least make the semis then Pikeville really doesn't have a "strong" team.

It will come down to Pikeville and Somerset, but which team is stronger remains to be seen.

I'll repeat my logic another way - It will be very hard for Somerset to come into Pikeville and get a win on the road. They are averaging giving up 45 points a game to their good opposition. Pikeville is giving up 20. Somerset will have to find some defense.

I think most people would agree with this. I do.
