How vulnerable is CAL without their QB?

Featured Replies

We don't officially know the status of CAL quarterback Austin Carr, and for the record, I don't want this thread to become littered with unsubstantiated rumors and speculation as to why he's not currently with the team. Let's focus on how his absence might affect the Centurions between the lines.

They weren't exactly tearing it up on offense through four games with Carr behind center, but not having him against Newport Central Catholic set the offense back even further and heavily contributed to their loss to the 'Breds. Obviously, they're not the same team without Carr. But, can they still win a championship with a great defense and Milton Wright at QB if that's how this all shakes out?

If they get by Desales, maybe, but I don't think so.

If they get one dimensional they are probably done in the long run.

Wright is not a good enough QB to lead them vs the better teams and win. He does his damage as a receiver/runner who throws as a surprise.

Hate to hear mr Carr is not playing for what ever reason. Fine young quarterback.

They are not the same team without Carr for the reasons mentioned above. HOWEVER...I have watched Wright up close and personal for three years now. I hate to put this much on one high school student, but I will personally NEVER count CAL out as long as he is on the field.

I have heard the opposite, but I would not be surprised to see him under center. I actually hope he plays so we have a more accurate idea of where these two teams stand.

I hope he does play. But... I doubt very seriously he does. Again I will be surprised if we see him back this year. But anything can happen..

I put this info from Jason Frakes of the CJ on another thread, which I think best fit here. He reported on their app that Carr is ineligible for the regular season. That he may return in time for the playoffs. Coach Davis of DeSales said that the Colts have trouble with running QBs. With Wright at QB, he touches the ball every play...hmm

When a team has to start moving players around into positions they are not comfortable it throws everything out of whack. It happened to Mayfield last year against CAL when their starting linebacker got ejected the week before. That moved a safety into LB and a freshman into safety. Wright is the real deal but he's playing a position he's never played.

I agree Fan24....but if it going to happen...sooner the better. That was a tuff break for ya'll last year with only a week to prepare. Now Wright has got one heck of a QB coach which happens to be his head coach Lafors and he is already played 2 games and had several weeks to get it down. No it's not the same without Carr and Wright at the receiver position. But you got the rest of the season to make changes and workout the kinks. Not such a bad thing to have possibly the best football player in 2A touching the ball on every offensive play ...the kid is such a great athlete. Just got to caoch/play as if he's not going to be there.

Carr will be back for the playoffs. All of that is entirely relevant, but I'm more interested in who wins the line of scrimmage. Last year was the first year that I felt CAL matched up with the Colts physically. DeSales has looked pretty good in the trenches so far this year, but this will be their toughest test to date.

You will only get an accurate assessment of their defensive line v your offensive line. I am guessing that the past 3 weeks have been spent working on blocking schemes that are more conducive to Wight playing QB like more bootleg and rolling pocket. I am not sure that that continues when Carr takes over as most of the passing game goes back to being open. That changes EVERYTHING for your DLines preparation and it may not play to CAL's strength. I don't know. It just won't be the same, I would think.
