BluegrassPreps Class 3A Rankings Discussion (8/28)

Featured Replies

Class 3A

Corbin had two games against elite out of state competition, one a hard fought victory, the other a painful loss where a large lead was squandered. This is the catalyst for Corbin to overtake Belfry as the new top ranked team following their ultra impressive win over Alcoa, TN. The Redhounds cannot rest on their laurels as 5A Pulaski County comes calling. The top of Class 3A in general has a measuring stick weekend approaching as five of the nine teams playing will face ranked foes and two others face 6A competition.

1. Corbin vs. 5A #10 Pulaski County

2. Belfry at 6A Bryan Station

3. Elizabethtown vs. 6A North Hardin

4. Central vs. 5A #4 Fern Creek

5. Boyle County at 2A #2 Danville

6. Lexington Catholic vs. 6A #7 Lafayette

7. Caldwell County at 4A Hopkinsville

8. Paducah Tilghman vs. 2A #4 Mayfield

9. Russell at Ironton (OH)

10. Western Hills -- OPEN

Kinda have to question if Lex Cath should even be on this list at the moment.

It is going to stay tough sledding for a few weeks for the Knights too.

Belfry should still be #1 in my opinion. If the opponents from last week were reversed, I'm of the opinion that Belfry would have won and Corbin would have lost, so it would be hard for me to flip-flop them.

We should know more about Corbin after they play Pulaski Co., who I imagine will be a better offensive team than Alcoa.

How long was Belfry in #1 spot in the BGP rankings?

Did they ever drop in 2016? I don't think so.

What about 2015?

I don't think anyone off the list has anything better than their win over Madison Central and no one off the list has faced anyone as good as Covington Catholic. They might not look great right now but I still don't see more than 6-7 teams in Class 3A that can beat Lexington Catholic.

You'll remember last year Central started 0-4 and was still in the top five. Lexington Catholic was 1-5 and still highly ranked.

Even if LexCath loses their next four they are probably still a top ten team, just because that schedule is insane.

I think Corbin vs. Huntington would have been a barn burner as well.

Corbin's Defense would have been much better suited to matchup with Huntington at this point in time, but I am not sure Corbin would have sustained the Offensive success Belfry had.

I think Corbin would have played them every bit as close as Belfry if not possibly beating them. I wouldn't see Corbin committing 4 turnovers like Belfry to swing the game.

Conversely I think Belfry vs. Alcoa would have been close as well. From what i saw of Alcoa I think Belfry's run game would have had sustained success, but also think Alcoa's run game would have had more traction against an undersized Belfry D-Line between tackles.

Long story short.. I would say Belfry/Alcoa would be a tossup (slight edge Alcoa) as would HHS/Corbin (slight edge Corbin). Just with different kind of scores.

Cov Cath point is valid. Madison Central may be as well, time will tell.

Boyle County took the top ranking from Belfry after the first two weeks of the 2015 season. Boyle had two really strong wins over Central Hardin and Bell County. Belfry struggled to put away Tates Creek in their only game to that point. The rankings for that week are posted below.

Following the blowout loss to Cabell Midland that year, Belfry actually fell to #3. They never officially got the top ranking back in the regular season.

I feel the same way. Cov Cath would have beat 5 and maybe a few more of the ranked teams just as bad. Cov Cath is just that good.

If the Knights was to lose their next 4 games, IMO they still are The team to beat in the district. You play the teams you need to prepare you for your district games. Losses outside of district play are just for pride and mean nothing on the big picture.

To me, Lexington Catholic is ahead of Boyle in any rankings until Boyle can prove that they can beat them.

A loss to Madison Central would have been a big red flag on the Knights. But they won - as they usually have against this standing opponent.

The Traditional Bank Bluegrass Bowl result is now a long running tendency for the Knights as well. The last Knight win in the bowl was in 2009 against...CovCath. It was lopsided this year. But how much of that is CovCath is the question.

The key for the Knights in the next four games is to play them competitively - and win them if possible, obviously. They could go 0-4 against this schedule but I would go with 2 - 2. Wins against LCA and Desales and losses against Lafayette and Highlands is my guess.

3A has 9 solid games this week. They all will be interesting.

CalPreps has the four teams rated this way:

Corbin 34.8 ( #9 in Kentucky)

Alcoa 27 ( #28 in Tennessee)

Huntington 20 ( #5 in West Virginia)

Belfry 18.5 (#26 in Kentucky)

They agree with you. Corbin beats Huntington and Alcoa over Belfry.
