BGHS did a fine job in containing East's team speed. The Raiders unofficially got only 37 yards total offense in the first half last night as the Purples blew out to a 34-0 lead. The Raiders didn't reach Purple territory until the second half. They ALMOST made it late in the first qtr, but the runner fumbled the ball and BGHS recovered at the East 40.

Senior K Casey Tinius got the scoring started with a 40 yd FG with 7:36 left in the first qtr, and the Purples led 3-0. Junior QB Trent Steelman added a one yd plunge with 3:28 left in the first qtr. Tinius booted the PAT, and BGHS led 10-0.

The Purples opened it up in the second qtr, as senior RB Avery Hibbitt scored from six yards out on the first play of the second qtr. Tinius put the ball through the uprights again, and the Purples led 17-0. Probably the most exciting play of the game was responsible for the next score. Steelman avoided being sacked twice and threw in the direction of senior WR Ryan Beard. Beard wound up with a 58 yd scoring play! Tinius booted the PAT and, at 9:28 left in the second qtr, the Purples led 24-0. At 3:36 left in the first half, Tinius kicked another FG, this one from 32 yards. That made the score BGHS 27, East 0. Senior Chase Carpenter recovered the fumble by the Raiders at the East 40, and that allowed the Purples to score one more time in the qtr. The Purples drove the ball methodically down to where senior RB Anthony Davis scored on a one yd plunge at 0:14. Tinius booted the PAT, and the Purples led 34-0.

To East's credit, their defense played very well in the second half, holding the Purples to one score, a three yd run by Hibbitt about midway through the third qtr. Tinius booted the PAT, and the Purples reached their final score of 41-0. It almost wasn't that way. The Purples did have to put up a great goal line stand in the fourth qtr to keep the goose egg on the night.

East has not gotten much respect this year because of their schedule. However, I'm quite sure that Ben Bruni will rectify that in the coming years because he's a winner. He guided the Raiders to their best season since 1997 last year (7-4), and he guided them to their best start ever (winning the first five games of the year) this year. Keep your eyes on them...they're going to be worth watching!

As for the Purples, nice going once again, guys! The Purples have their open date next week before they travel to Scottsville to take on Allen Co-Scottsville when they come back.:D

Sorry Henry and 'Pick for keeping you all in the dark...sleep deprivation is a real pain! Didn't mean to keep you all waiting!:D That was probably the most important East/BGHS game ever played since we first played them when I was a soph in 1974. If anybody can pull the Raiders out of the doldrums and help East earn respect on the gridiron, it is my pal Ben. I can't wait to see what he does with the schedule and his new class in 4A next year!:thumb: Locally, Greenwood will be in 6A, the Purples and Warren Central will be back in the same district in 5A again next season, and East will be in 4A.

Last night, mentor (Wallace) simply had too much for protege (Bruni). Best of luck to the Raiders and Ben the rest of the season!:D

This should bring the East faithful back down to earth.

Question for Bowling Green fans: aren't you worried that having the last 7 games on your schedule be against such inferior competiton that it doesn't prepare you effectively for the post-season? Bowling Green hasn't had the post-season success in the last 15 - 20 years that maybe they should have; could this be a reason?

Their last 4 games have been won by a combined score of 217-14.

Their remaining 3 games are against teams that are 6-12 and have all been outscored by their opponents for the season.

BG is clearly a very good team, and are having a great season! I just hope this type of schedule doesn't stunt their growth as a team. They are clearly, at the very least, a co-favorite to win the "AAA" crown this year (along with Highlands).

Bowling Green has been in the state championship game 3 times in the past 12 years, winning it once. Thats getting to the championship once every 4 years. While that isn't Highlands/Boyle type numbers, it is as good/better than every other 3A team. They have a good chance of making it back this season. Their schedule last year was worse and they made it to the championship game. The schedule will have no affect on the Purples, win or lose in the playoffs.

Okay. Fair enough.

I don't think the schedule had an adverse effect on the Purples' last year, except that they never faced a team that could throw the ball anywhere nearly as effectively as Lexington Catholic.
