Boone needs 15 plays to score. Conner got all their scores on big plays while Boone never attempted a pass greater than 15 yards. Boone also needs about 6 more kids in the rotation. Too many kids going 2 ways and you can see the fatigue in the 4th quarter.

Connor's QB looks promising.

Who started at qb?

I believe Cooper Gullion started but Jared Hicks may have played more. I think P.P was referring to Jared Hicks as a QB that looks promising. He was running well and made some nice passes to open receivers.

My recap with observations:

Conner scored on their 2nd offensive play of the game with a 75 yrd TD by Christian Webster on a stretch play around the left side. There was no outside contain on the play and he went the distance without anyone being within 5 yrds of him. 7-0 Conner at the end of the 1st quarter.

Boone got some momentum from their run game. I liked what I saw in the run game with a variety of runs and spreading the opportunities around. The Conner D started out keying on the FB who got some tough yards up the middle and kept the chains moving. But two other backs got significant carries and a fourth also ran well. The coaches have to be pleased with the run blocking and the backs running north and south. One stat I saw on another site said Boone had 230 yrds rushing. KHSAA site had it at 208 yrds, but those are the stats turned in by Conner. I imagine those yards are distributed pretty evenly among the top 3 backs.

Boone scored in the second quarter after moving the ball down the field with the ground game. But the score came off of a pass to the H-Back. 7-7.

Conner got another score on the drive following Boone’s TD. They got to the Boone 40 yrd line and had a 2nd and 10. They threw two incomplete passes. On 4th and 10 they threw a sideline pattern and Boone’s coverage reacted too late and the throw was on the money. TD and xpt with 58 sec. to go in the half. 14-7 at half time.

Opening drive of the second half Boone marched down the field on the strength of the run with a pass or two thrown in. They were just inside the 20 with a 4th down and elected to attempt a field goal. The hike bounced a long the ground and the kicker picked it up and made a few yards but didn’t get back to the line of scrimmage. Conner ball.

The next series Conner march down field on a series of short passes, QB sneaks, and short runs. At the Boone 30 yrd. line, the QB threw a sideline pass to Simpson who leaped in the air to make an acrobatic catch. The Boone defender was too late to knock down the pass but got to the receiver while he was in the air. Simpson landed on his shoulder completely out of bounds but the refs conferred and called it a completion inside the 5 yrd line. The Boone faithful weren’t happy with the call but we didn’t have time to pout. Conner lined up in the shotgun at the 3 yrd line and hiked the ball. The left side of the line opened a huge hole and the QB had called his own number. As he went through where the tackle used to be, Boone’s LB came across and stripped the ball. It squirted into the end zone and Boone recovered. Boone first down at the 20.

At the end of the 3rd quarter the score was Conner 14, Boone 7. Boone’s drive stalled and they were forced to punt.

Conner took over at their own 30 and after a couple of runs gashed through the defense, first by Jared Hicks, then Christian Webster. Conner had a 1st and ten at their own 47. Hicks threw a 13 yrd pass to #6 out on the numbers. The Boone defender was not ready for the pass underneath and after a quick move to the inside the Conner receiver went unchallenged to the house. Conner 21-7 with over 8 minutes remaining in the game.

Boone came out with a different set than they had been using with smaller, quicker running backs. This proved effective as they marched down to the Conner 20. With 1st and 10 at the 20 yrd line, Boone put the big boys back in. I remember wondering why they would make this chnge when they had been moving the ball. A rush up the middle yielded no gain. The smaller set came back in and promptly lost 3 yards. On third and 13, QB Grau rolled to his left and lofted a beautiful touch pass to Trevor Miller who was well-covered. Miller got separation at the last minute and the ball dropped perfectly into his hands with the Conner defender sticking his hands in there just a tad late. TD Boone. Missed xpt.

21-13 Conner leading with just 4 minutes remaining in the game.

On the ensuing kick-off Conner covered the onside kick and took over at their 48 yrd line. After a series of runs by Hicks and Webster moved the chains, Conner spread out with trips to the right. Boone missed the coverage and Hicks threw to Simpson (?) in the middle of the field which gave Connor the ball at the 3 yrd. line of Boone. Hicks ran a keeper and was down at the half-foot mark. Conner let the clock run out and the final score was 21-13 Conner with the win.

Looking for the silver lining in this for Boone, there are three things that stand out. First, the running attack is well-balanced. They got production from 4 backs. A fifth back also made positive yards when given the opportunity. They are more than able to move the chains with this varied attack and they excel at YAC. A second thing is that Conner’s scores came on terrible miscues by Boone. I don’t mean to take anything away from Conner’s skill players who executed well on the scoring plays, but these were blown assignments. These were mental errors that can be fixed. Webster’s 75 yrds was a thing of beauty from Conner’s perspective but where was contain for Boone? Boone CAN do better on that play in the future. The several long pass plays that yielded long gains/scores were also broken assignments by the defense, with the exception of the long pass when the receiver was forced out of bounds. The two TD receptions were defensive errors. Conner only completed 8 passes in the game. The third positive thing I want to mention is the passing by Boone’s QB, Zac Grau. His passes were very accurate with the exception of two. One was overthrown in the waning minutes of the first half. And another was underthrown. But all the others were on the money. As his receivers gain confidence and clean up their routes, the passing game will play a larger role. I do want to say that Boone needs to work on the run defense. Fatigue may have played a factor but Conner got too many yards on the ground and at crucial moments. I’d like to see the defense punish the ball carrier more in the future. That’s how I saw the game. Congratulations to Conner and good luck with the rest of the season.

@theguru called it a moral victory for Boone but it didn’t feel like it walking out of the stadium. I hate to lose and so did the boys. They were confident they could win on Friday. I do believe there will be some W’s in the column for Boone this year.
