What's up with the Navy Captains and Boat Drivers? 2 wrecks in a month!

It is hard to understand how this happens, but I have next to no knowledge of how this operation works and if the other ship can cause this to be unavoidable.

The captain of the USS Fitzgerald and his two most senior officers have all been relieved of their posts and are facing charges to be brought up by the military. Apparently the indication was that there were literally no personnel on the bridge while the ship was steaming along.

Repairs on the USS Fitzgerald are estimated at $500 million plus.

Overheard a piece today that spoke about the possibility of a "jamming" event on the ship's computer steering. Interesting if true.

If they can take ships and drones, automated cars should be fun in 5-10 years.

If the Navy ships, with all the sophisticated tech they have is getting hacked, then someone better upgrade our tech dept.

Better hope they dont hack into a nuclear sub and force launch a nuke and blame America for starting a war.

30% of the Navy's ships were built in the 60's.

That's irrelevant it's the software on board getting hacked. Russia and China, are as good as us with computers.

Its relevant, not all the ships are up to date on software & tech either.

The older the tech the harder it is to hack. If it is not networked at all it is virtually unhackable unless you have a direct physical connection to it. This is why the age of the computers in the ICBM silos is actually a good thing. If we networked them it would be a disaster waiting to happen.

The higher the tech level gets the more dangerous the hijacking of our networks gets. They really ought to take a closer look at isolating certain systems if they haven't already.

On a side note I wonder if this will lead to an increased call by some to reactivate some of the old Iowas since they would be virtually unhackable by dint of the age of everything on board. :lol2:

For what it's worth, I know someone in the Navy and his opinion is that sleep deprivation could've been a likely factor in these collisions. He said a lot of these crews are constantly tired beyond belief and are at the controls. Don't know if this is even plausible but thought it was something worth considering.
