The school district my wife works for bought solar eclipse glasses for every student. Come to find out they are not "approved" eye protection. Now, all of the students must stay at school until 4:00 pm, shades drawn on all windows and the kids can't go outside all day. Is this the most ridiculous thing you've heard of yet?

Yes. Ridiculous.

Those of you that are remembering an eclipse are remembering a partial eclipse. We've had several in KY in the last 30 years. None of them have had this percentage of the sun covered, along with part of KY being in the total eclipse zone, so this one is a much bigger deal.

We also have a lot more bad science being spread. Don't get me started on that.

There was some sort of eclipse in the early 80s too. I remember making paper boxes into viewing devices.

There was an annular (moon farther away from earth so not total) eclipse in 1984 who's greatest eclipse point was over New York/New Jersey and another in 1994 with the apex over Wisconsin.

The last total eclipse who's apex was near the US was in 1979 and it's greatest eclipse point was over east central Manitoba.

Actual questions/comments people have made:

1) School starts on Monday. Can we move the eclipse activities to Tuesday?

2) How dud Kentucky get chosen to be part of the eclipse?

3) Please make sure to keep your pets inside, as they don't have glasses to wear and will damage their eyesight. Keep cows, horses, etc., in a barn with the doors closed.

Alright, that one made me laugh.

We live in a litigious society, folks.

In many counties in Florida, they are closing all schools at noon and, here in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, all county sponsored programs at 1 PM.

Parents have to sign a legal waver to allow their children participate in science programs related to the eclipse.

It's better for the school systems to send the kids home and leave the responsibility of viewing the eclipse to the parents, than to be sued. My daughter-in-law is a principle over in Seminole County and she told me that is exactly why they are closing at noon.

I remember there being some type of eclipse when I was in elementary school, early-mid 90s HT and I are around the same age I believe.

How does the school district recover all the tax money spent on the non useable approved sun glasses? Also, if this suppose to be a major health concern then why am I not excused from work early? I can't wait to see the first lawsuit against an employer for not taking the appropriate measures to protect an employee. I'm going to Hopkinsville (ground zero) with a truck load of tin foil hats and make millions.

My school used PTA money for the glasses. Our kids will be viewing the eclipse from our football stadium.

Your tinfoil hat hat people are NOT going to the eclipse, so Hopkinsville would not be your area to sell them. Those people are on board.

Yep, I'm not sure exactly what kind it was.

I had a hunch that had something to do with it.

Just sad.
