I beleive the Raceland- Russell game is long overdue. I was on the '89 team and we was really wanting to play the Devils that year. We were really wanting a shot at (Thad) Ward and (Scott) Vallance that year. We had the killer B's Brett, Burroughs(Ram coach now), Buck McCloud. Very good group and well coached. This game will be a big plus for both schools.

I also forgot James Boggs

Guys, I am hearing alot about schedules next year and with so many more openings than before, does anyone have the proposed schedule for either team???

I graduated from Russell with Clyde Waggoner in May 1974. The game would have been played in the fall of 73 - his senior season. That was a good game - much closer than expected. :thumb:

I have no idea right now Zebra, I do believe that both teams will be in different districts than they are now and I have heard a rumor that Raceland might be in a AA district but I am not sure.

You are correct about Big Fig Oldrambler!! He was a big part of the Ram tradition. He not only was a great player but an even bettter person. He and the others in his class picked up on the Ram Pride tradition and passed it on to the younger players and that team concept is still there today!!

Thanks for the props cvillecat, our class just followed the leaders before us; like you and your brother. On a trip back to Kentucky, about 6 years after the infamous kick, I went bass fishin’ and turtle juggin’ with Clyde. We were right civil with each other. :argue:

Due to the hype, a Raceland vs. Russell football game will increase the interest in both football programs and generate lots of cash for both schools (I’m sure the stadiums will be filled to capacity). I believe the Russell game will help the Rams become more competitive with dominate single “A” schools like Beechwood. From what I understand, the up and coming classes at Raceland have been competitive with Russell in the JV and JFL programs. Even though Raceland graduates a lot of talent this year, Russell will have their hands full come game time next year.

If the series works out maybe a traveling trophy is in order. Sorta like the apple barrel at Paintsville/Johnson Central. Lots of railroad heritage at both schools....trophy could be something as simple as a lantern, hardhat, crosstie, ect.

Does any of the old Russell/Raceland remember the Apache restuarant? Back in the day, it was a hangout for players from both schools...It used to get a little dicey there after we BTD :fire: .

Here is what I have been told is Russell's schedule for next year...

Russell Red Devils 2007 calendar:

First week--- open

Week 2 - Greenup at Russell

Week 3 - Ashland at Russell

Week 4 - Russell at Boyd

Week 5 - Russell at West Carter -District game

Week 6 - Lewis at Russell - District game

Week 7 - Mason at Russell - District game

Week 8 - Russell at East Carter -District game

Week 9 - Russell at Lawrence County

Week 10 - SOMEONE at Russell - Team has been confirmed (current 4A team)

Week 11 - Russell at Raceland

Or the Red Ramblers  Like I said, I am not going there  . I am glad we can talk about it in good fun though.:thumb:

I prefer the Red Ramblers moniker...just don't shorten it to Rams...

Maybe a better mascot would be something with a railroad theme due to the shared history of the communities and continued ties to the industry.

And whoever said they would field some pretty tough football teams isn't kidding...not only football, but most every sport going.

Thanks Greybeard, it's gets harder to remember as each year passes by. It was a good game but it sure was a tough one to lose. Was John Hillman the QB that season?

Great idea about the trophy Fig, It would add a little more fun and give the players a little more incentive for the game. I do remember the Apache, good times to be had by all there. Nice post!!

:thumb: The combo of the two would be a tough match for all sports. Most of the kids from both schools are teammates in the summer leagues and have had some very good teams. My last year of playing for Post 76 we had several players from Russell on the team. Great ball players, we had a great team also, though we lost in the Championship of the State tourney to Morehead. I still remain friends with several of those guys.

Van Firestine was the QB in 1973. I think Hillman was QB in 72.

With Raceland's non-district schedule, I don't know why they would want to play Russell. I know it's a local game, but I don't know why to get a game that will most likely go against them.

It is not always a sure thing the game will go against them. There is not a team anywhere that can't be beat. The odds would certainly be against the Rams but you never know the outcome until you play the game. Raceland plays the better teams to prepare them for the district race. Playing a team of Russell's caliber only makes you a better team and shows the younger kids what it takes to become successful. Raceland has always played tough competition outside their district and I hope they continue to do so.

Again, many thanks. See, I told you I was getting old!! That was also my Senior year. The score was Russell 9...Raceland 6

Hillman would have had a field day in today's game of the spread offense. He was a great QB .
