Best Middle Linebacker in the Mountain Region

Featured Replies

Brent Slusher at this moment already has the size, speed, and strength to be an outstanding college football player. I have seen him twice and I come away being unimpressed by his play at linebacker. However, Auburn offered him as a tight end and I am told he was phenomenal at their summer camp.

With his freakish athletic talent, he might be better at the college level than at the high school level.

Good luck to Brent Slusher of Bell County @ whatever college he chooses. I'm sure he will do good anywhere.

Slusher, Bell Co. I'm not sure on the name, but I remember a MLB from Williamsburgh High School last year that was a junior, I believe his last name was Root? However, I just remember his stats were pretty impressive for his size.

Dragon, I agree with you. Root is having another good year for an improved Jacket defense. He is averaging around 14 tackles a game from what i hear, and although only 5'8", is receiving alot of interest from MSC schools and several D2 and D3 schools. From what I've heard from his coaching staff the kid will not be outworked and has a motor that just don't quit!

Like he said, he was recruited to play tight end, not linebacker.

I was at the Leslie game, and I guess schemes were a part of it, but he didn't have that many tackles. They played five linebackers and Leslie tried to pass all night. All I was suggesting was that alot of people get caught up in hype and don't notice some of the kids that can play. He's a big, physical talent and I did not rip him. Besides, the outplaying part came from inside the Bell locker room, not just my opinion.

Hey, Slusher is the best linebacker in this region, maybe even the state.

I played with the most hyped player ever in this state, (Tim Couch), and I'm sure some players on other teams were overlooked because everyone was busy watching what Couch was doing.

There are other guys having great years at this position, sometimes it takes ruffling a few feathers to get the attention of people.

The scheming part is dead on BIG DOG. I don't think they have used Slusher on a blitz more than three of four times. They use him as a cover linebacker, because he has no one to cover the middle of the field if he blitzes. Mark my words, if he can stay healthy, and get meaner, he will be a serious force, because the kid is a freakish athlete.

This is a no brainer.

To have a scholorship offer from Auburn is pretty impressive. They have a top 5 recruiting class year in and year out.

Slusher was being recruited to play TE at Auburn, No Way could he play LB on the college LEVEL in the SEC.

I compare Slusher to Notre Dame.....Over-Hyped.

He might be overhyped from a statistical standpoint as far as his high school production.....tackles, catches, etc. But let me tell you something, he is not overhyped on a physical level. His size, speed, strength, and power (measured by a legitiment 36 inch vertical jump in one of the combines) is unmatched in Kentucky. College recruiters are looking for upside in a prospect. This kid certainly has a huge upside.

Tommy Tuberville and staff are not new to this game.....they know what they are doing and I am sure think Slusher is a real find.

Does it really matter? He is getting a free ride to get his college education.

Only time and the good man above really knows the outcome of this kid. He definetly has the size, speed, work ethic and I have been told the grades to possibilly make it at Auburn. Besides, he is a great kid. Guys, you need to remember these are 17-18 year old kids you are bashing on here. They are some MOMMY'S baby, and you know what happens when you mess with moma's baby. You better watch out. I saw several kids at Leslie have great games on defense. #3, #8, #63, do I think they can play at Auburn, or for that matter, any other small college? I doubt it, but who can judge off of one game. Just trying to make point here guys.

You are way off target! If you could see Slusher's work ethic, and day to day routine....he is definitely a D-1 player. I worked with a college team who won a national championship....10 players went on to NFL careers....Slusher could have matched up with many of them. This kid went out, because recruiters are not coming to Mountains that much, and attended some key combines. At these combines he showed the talent that many times he does not get to show at Bell due to their offense and defensive schemes. Bell rarely throws to him at tight end as well!! He is an all-around team player. Slusher's performances at national levels of competition is what won him his scholarship offers.

This is where you are mistaken. He has SEC offers at LB. Actually, Tuberville offered Brent because of his ability to play defense and offense. Versatility is another commodity college coaches like.

Brent doesn't have to prove anything to you and your opinion is neither here nor there. He can choose where and what he wants to play so what you think is irrelevant. Furthermore, I don't know why it possibly matters what position he is recruited at....he's gets to play D1 ball. Does LB have more prestige than TE? Or is it just a way for someone to trash him and act like what they think is important? If it makes you feel better to look ill-informed and petty, knock yourself out.

One thing that really irks me about this area is the lack of support for the kids. Thank you to those that do support them. It helps the kids.

Look at NE KY, everybody gets behind their kids and are proud. Instead of being glad that a kid is doing good and MAYBE helping raise the perception of KY ball (more specifically, MTN area), some folks have to whine, cry, and try to tear them down. What Brent and the few other recruits have gotten has taken NOTHING away from anyone else in this state nor kept a single kid from earning the same thing. What I suggest is that people teach their kids, or themselves, to work hard and earn it and if they can't, won't, or don't have the ability....quit howling about those that do. If someone is truly "overlooked", it's up to them to change it. It wasn't taken away by someone else's success.

Auburn, SC, LSU, etc. don't normally recruit this area. Does it occur to any of the small minded that Brent Slusher and Brad Durham may just possibly help people think there might be worthwhile athletes here and that making a trip or looking at film may not be a waste of time?

Personally anytime that Auburn comes knocking at your door, you have to be a pretty good athlete. I believe that Brent Slusher is the best linebacker in the region but i believe that the best linebacking core is at Johnson Central. Both Tackett and Johnson of JC are solid linebackers and just have that built in linebacker instinct. Every game that JC has played, these two have left there mark on there opponent and if you want to hear alot of good pad popping, take the drive to JC and watch these two or for that matter the whole defense bring the wood to its opponents.

What kind of stats do the JC boys have, i.e. Number of tackles, tackles per game, forced fumbles, etc.

I dont know exact statistics on either but Tackett has hit double digit in tackles in almost every game while Johnson has averaged probably around 7 or 8. They neither one have high numbers in sacks cause they are usually not needed for blitzing cause the fron 5 does a pretty good job of applying enough pressure. Tackett has 2 INTs and i think that Johnson has 1 INT so far. To me what makes these boys so great is not so much there numbers, which are solid, but its just the way they play the position. When either one of them hit you you know that you've been hit. They are very balanced in both their ability to play the run and pass. Just a good solid linebacking core.

Jumbo athlete Brent Slusher of Pineville Bell County is another prospect that has seen his stock rise in recent months. The 6-foot-3, 221-pounder has good size and quickness and can fit in at a number of positions at the next level, including tight end (where he likely will play) or outside linebacker.

Slusher has shown he is an SEC-level athlete and multiple camps, including the Athens NIKE Camp in April, where he was among the top performers. It would not be a surprise to see Slusher end up with a four star rating before all is said and done.
