Supergroups

Featured Replies

Supergroup - an exceptionally successful rock group, in particular one formed by musicians already famous from playing in other groups.

Who are your favorites?

Asia - 1982

John Wetton (King Crimson, Uriah Heep)

Steve Howe (Yes)

Carl Palmer (Emerson, Lake & Palmer)

Geoff Downes (The Buggles, Yes)

I really enjoyed Asia back in the day.

When I hear the word "supergroup", I immediately think of Cream.

And when I think of Cream, I think of Coffee. :)

Chickenfoot

Lead Singer Sammy Hagar (ex–Van Halen, Montrose, Solo)

Bassist Michael Anthony (also ex–Van Halen)

Guitarist Joe Satriani (Guitar Teacher extraordinaire, played with too many groups to list)

Drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Replacement Drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp, BoDeans, John Fogerty, Cinderella)

From my experience, "supergroups" tend to be very bloated and rarely live up to the expectations that come from bringing poop-tons of immensely talented musicians together. Internal chemistry is often sorely lacking, and the magic all those talented people had with their original bands is rarely recreated.

Checkout this acoustic gem of "Heat Of The Moment" :ylsuper:

Crosby Stills Nash and Young.

The second one that comes to mind.

The first and BEST supergroup still...Cream.

Eric Clapton

Jack Bruce

Ginger Baker

Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, & Howe

Pretty much just Yes without bassist Chris Squire who really was the only member of Yes throughout the years who appeared on every official Yes studio release through their ever changing and evolving lineup of spectacular musicians.

Cant believe Velvet Revolver or Audioslave haven't been mentiond.

Their debut album NOLA, is one of my top 10 all time favorites. They have released 5 albums in 26 years. Also, they are one of the very bands that I still make an effort to see live.

The Power Station was a 1980's supergroup made up of singer Robert Palmer, former Chic drummer Tony Thompson, and Duran Duran members John Taylor on bass, and Andy Taylor on guitar.

GTR were a British rock band founded in 1985 by former Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe, and former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett.

The Firm were a British rock supergroup composed of singer Paul Rogers (Free and Bad Company), guitarist Jimmy Page (The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin), drummer Chris Slade (Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Uriah Heep, and AC/DC), and fretless bass player Tony Franklin.

Gamma was a band formed in 1979 by guitarist Ronnie Montrose (of Montrose) and singer Davey Pattison (formerly a vocalist for the solo work of Robin Trower who was known for being the guitarist of Proco Haram).

Ronnie Montrose died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 2012 at age 64 after he discovered that his prostate cancer had return. Apparently he had also been plagued with depression since he was a small child.
