June 30, 20179 yr Some would argue a non-violent purse thief being chased by 8 cruisers for an hour at sometimes high speeds is not worth the risk to the officers nor citizens. I can see that argument. Some would argue that you don't reward a thief for running off by not chasing him either. Pursuits are almost a no win situation for police today. If they don't chase them the public calls them lazy or a coward and if they do they say they are too high strung for the job or an adrenaline jockey. I'd bet those 12 people that got their identity back without all of the expense and trouble that can come from having your ID and credit cards stolen are glad he was apprehended when he was before he got rid of their personal belongings.

Can't imagine very many people would agree that this particular chase should have happened.
June 30, 20179 yr If you watch the video they pull a officer that was underneath him. That might be why they was hitting him.

I definitely think they're in a no-win situation when it comes to police chases. However, I have been mugged...twice. Both times I had to call and cancel credit cards and bank cards, and I had to go through the pain in the butt of getting a new drivers license. Would I have liked to see my mugger's get arrested and be punished for what they did? Absolutely. Would I ever dream that a cop would go after either of those muggers in a 40-minute long police chase? No way. Would I have felt some kind of guilt for the rest of my life had some innocent person been killed in a crash resulting from a police chase in order to get my wallet back? Yes. Not a doubt in my mind. Would I be furious with the police if they killed or maimed one of my family members as an uninvolved bystander when they were in a high speed police chase trying to apprehend a purse thief? You betcha. Edited June 30, 20179 yr by Colonels_Wear_Blue
June 30, 20179 yr Literally never heard this narrative. Can't imagine very many people would agree that this particular chase should have happened. My wife hears this weekly, anytime someone gets something stolen and they don't get their items back within a few days they call in complaining that the officers are too lazy to work the cases. They expect an entire CSI Forensics team to show up because a chain saw was stolen off their porch. Or if they think some one should have been arrested and they aren't it's because the police are cowards. Anytime Police don't do what is expected by some in the public they do get called lazy or a coward. Police never know the entire story when someone won't stop for them. If a policeman goes to pull someone over for speeding and they refuse to stop, just let them go because it was just speeding right? Catch them next time. Someone shop lifts at KMart and drives away, police find them and they refuse to stop....just let them roll, right? They can catch them next time. This would be a great and safe society if the police would just stop anytime someone decided to just drive on and not stop for them. I'd venture to say in many communities at least 75% of the arrest warrants that are served are served when the person with the warrant is found at a traffic stop. But if he'd just refuse to stop for the busted tail light he'd never get arrested, because something that minor the police should never chase him for it. What looks like a minor infraction, in many cases leads to the uncovering of much larger crimes or criminals. Should police back off if it gets too dangerous, yes. Should they have in this case, I don't think so...it never seemed to get out of hand. The reason it lasted as long as it did was because the police seemed to be proceeding with caution and not forcing the action with him.

You betcha. Could you make a list for the police of what they can pursue a wanted felon for? It's horrible anytime an unintended by stander is involved and I'd feel much like you would. But I would not be faulting the police I'd be faulting the CRIMINAL that brought all of this to action. The length 10 minutes, 40 minutes or an hour doesn't matter as much as the way in which it is conducted and the way the pursued is driving. In this case the police seemed to be content to just follow him until he finally stopped.
July 1, 20179 yr I would assume there is dash cam video that will tell a better story than footage from a helicopter. Does Louisville metro wear body cams?
July 1, 20179 yr I'm not going on record with my opinion on what happened here until I see dash cam video. I will say if I caught this dude stealing my GF purse out of my car I would deliver a similar beatdown. Most theifs are chumps.

I'm not sure if they're required to or not, but I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a Louisville Metro officer who wasn't wearing one.

How many times has she heard them called lazy or cowards for not chasing a guy in a high speed pursuit for stealing some purses? What you described isn't the same situation, at all.
July 1, 20179 yr I'm not sure if they're required to or not, but I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a Louisville Metro officer who wasn't wearing one. Pretty sure they all wear them.

July 1, 20179 yr You're not a cop. Not the same situation. I'd have the same reaction as you. Like I said not commenting on the cops yet. I want to see closer footage. If he wasn't resisting I will be on your side. I learned to wait to react on this site.
July 1, 20179 yr 1. My inclination would be that if he is running, he's got more to hide than something that'd land him 12 days in jail. So I have no problem with the chase, and in fact, I'd support police chasing anyone who ran. 2. Just from what I saw, the arrest looked pretty bad. The fact that one cop had to physically stop another from throwing punches was a bad look.
July 1, 20179 yr Need I comment? Just another thug that stole purses and endangered lives for 40 minutes. So he took a 30 second beating till they got him cuffed. And than the one extra jab after he was up. I have no pity for this scum. Cops have a tough job and if we keep crapping on them, no one will want to do the job.
