June 8, 20179 yr I have a friend with cancer who is recovering from a week in the hospital. I am going to help with meals for him. The tricky part is that it can't be spicy or have a lot of seasonings in it, which is pretty much all that I know how to cook! Can you all help with suggestions? I am already doing a pasta night. He also isn't a big fan of chicken dishes. Also, does anyone have a great dessert recipe using apples? That is his favorite.
June 8, 20179 yr I think a pot roast would be nice. I don't have a recipe right now, but I bet there are plenty of crock pot options.
June 9, 20179 yr Apple dumplings that my wife and daughter make are crazy easy and delicious. Key ingredients are granny smith apples and croissants. End product doesn't seem like croissant as much as a pastry. Found this online it's very similar to thier recipe. Apple Crescent Dumplings Recipe - Pillsbury.com

June 9, 20179 yr Author I think a pot roast would be nice. I don't have a recipe right now, but I bet there are plenty of crock pot options. I have a phenomenal pot roast recipe! I mentioned that to someone else and they essentially said that roasts weren't a summer thing. I'm with you! It is one of my best and easiest dishes. I'll add that to my menu for next week.

June 9, 20179 yr Not sure if you’re asking for recipes but off the top of my head: subs, BLT’s, salmon, mac n’ cheese, meatloaf Soups: potato or bean Maybe try to put together a pizza or enchiladas with mild seasoning? Good luck, you are a good and thoughtful friend!
June 9, 20179 yr I will make this the dessert for pasta night! Use Mt Dew for the lemon lime drink for best results...sprite doesn't turn out as well.

June 9, 20179 yr As @Pura Vida mentioned salmon is a great choice. It has a lot of flavor on it's own, doesn't need much seasoning. Tomato soup with some type of sandwich would be great as well, I'm not sure if grilled cheese is allowed or tolerable but that would be a good meal. There are a lot of things you can do with many types of fish without adding much seasoning so that's something to look into. Salmon, Tuna, and Swordfish are all plenty flavorful on their own. Steak with a slight amount of salt and maybe white pepper instead of black pepper. Maybe a hobo pie as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich as a dessert? I'm not much help on desserts, but hobo pies are great.
June 9, 20179 yr Soups are always good. Home made, so they are not too salty. Chicken noodle, vegetable soup, and beef barley are good and nutritious. Nothing too spicy Milkshakes are also not a bad idea.
June 9, 20179 yr Of course, it is always good to ask the patient what they feel like, as you did with the apples. When my mother got cancer, she had a weird craving for sweet and sour chicken. I never saw her eat that once before she got sick. We ate a lot of it that year. She has been gone 30 years and I still can't see that on a menu without thinking about her.

I've seen people that have been sick that used to love certain types of food but couldn't stand them during treatment, mainly due to the taste. Most seem to gravitate toward fish or some type of shellfish. Some of the biggest meat eaters I've known have said that beef tastes metallic during treatment.
