My ultimate solution would be to legalize all drugs. The money we are spending to fight the War on Drugs would then be used for treatment and rehabilitation. We would also stop paying private prisons to house non-violent drug offenders.

 

Also, the billions we currently dump on the War on Drugs could be funded by the taxes off the legal market.

I just find the "humanity" and "morality" angle funny. We've long since done lots of things that are inhumane, immoral, etc. but THIS is what we want to wave the morality flag over?

I think you and I are on the same page often on this subject, but I just don't see how I could be on board with some of those drugs, namely heroin being legal, to the point of being able to buy it in some drive thru like a liquor store. I agree with your premise for sure, and back to the original point, you can't in good conscience allow someone to pass when you have the antidote at your disposal, no matter who foots the bill. We just can't go there.

Past that, there needs to be a legal way to buy other drugs. I'm not sure what that is and I agree on "harder" substances that probably doesn't need to be at your local convenient store.

 

There can be places where these drugs are available and all the extraneous death and violence that comes from the black market and illegality of the drugs can be combated in this way.

I could get behind this for certain. But man what a bunch of hurdles that I'd never trust our politicians to itemize and address. The problem is that they would never have the public's best interest at hand. I know that's a jaded perspective, but the amount of money that lines the pockets of our congressmen/women from some private entity that could benefit from their vote will always slant what should be a decision for the common good.

I agree. But I think we should keep trying to get better.

It's a slippery slope when you start devaluing people's lives and putting money ahead of humanity. What's the next group we look to save a buck on after the junkies are gone?? Whoever it is, I'm sure it gets easier after you've made that type of decision once.

I do. I'd like to think that the government would be smart enough to not kill their customers. I think regulated legalized drugs would do wonders for our society in a lot of ways.

I don't.

 

Overdoses are based on increased use by the user. If they aren't getting high from the same amount they did last week, they up the amount they are using. This is when most overdoses occur. They have the need to keep getting high and their tolerance builds over time to where they need a larger dose than prior uses.
