2A State Champions

Mercer should win it since they are a 4A schools playing in 2A but I don't think they are 30 points better than the top teams.

Numbers don't win squat. There are alot of bigger schools that can't compete with the top half of 1A. You still have to have quality in your numbers. Mercer does have quality numbers. Mercer was on the verge of being very good last year before injuries killed them. They do have 3A numbers this year. I would say that Mercer and their neighbor Danville are on the same level talent wise. Danville has 40 players total. If they played 10 times they would probably need a tiebreaker game. I'm just saying that I know that there are alot of teams in AA that have alot of quality players. And some field around 70 players as does Mercer. Old Mercer merged with Harrodsburg that had slightly over 20 players from a 3-8 team. Not to say that Harrodsburg didn't have talent last year. They just didn't have the numbers. Mercer had better numbers with around 45 players but, didn't have the speed. You add numbers and speed and that's where you get your difference. Not 900 kids in the school. Half those kids are girls. Now Mercer has numbers on the sideline to match the upper AA teams that had the depth advantage over them last year. 8 out of 11 starters on defense played for Mercer last year. It's close to 50/50 on offense. They also got a couple of high quality out of state transfers that were eligible this year. I understand why alot of people aren't happy about it. But it isn't like they had 900 kids lined up and said We will take you, you, you, and so on. The real advantage is where they lost so many key players (like their entire O-line and some huge losses on the defensive side) due to graduation that with the added 12 or 13 players (majority are seniors) from Harrodsburg that play significant minutes kinda slid into those spots that you might have had to fill with a younger inexperienced player. So just about everybody that starts this season started last season at Mercer or Harrodsburg. Once again, there is your difference. Not 900 kids.

They will be 5-A next year and yes they will beat anybody in 2-A by 30. Sorry Russell won't win the championship and I know my Catholic team won't even be at Papa John's this year. Just one of them things and Mercer is just that good this year. Who Knows? I think the only chance Russell or Belfry has is if Catholic or someother 2-A west team miraculously beats them. Doubtful though, although it was doubtful last year that O'Cath was going to be Ft.Campbell... Again Who Knows?

You can ask anyone from this area, the Ashland team that got beat by Raceland is not the same Ashland team who beat Belfry and Russell. So, you continue to think that if you want but you weren't at any of those games you speak of. I don't think even the Ashland coaches took Raceland serious and thought they could use that game as an experiment. It failed and now they have players in their rightful positions and they are 20 times better than they were that night. I'm not joking, 20 times better. You can think that way if you want but it would be ignorant too.

That is your opinion. What makes Ashland so much better now? What was the Ashland experiment? How to get beat by a middle of the pack class A team? You would think that at some point in that game they would have aborted the experiment and took care of business. That is not even close to a good excuse for that embarrasing loss. That's like Mercer losing to Casey Co. Mercer let Casey score on a 85 yard drive to cut the lead to 13-6 friday night. Mercer could have kept on playing that way and would have probably been in trouble. But, they aborted whatever experiment they were working on and scored 4 Td's in the next 7 minutes. I would say that Ashland did overlook Raceland but by the time they realized this, it was too late. A good team will figure out early if they underestimated an opponent and make the necessary adjustments. Prime example from saturday night with UK and FLA. You got a special calculator to come up with 20 times better? Did that come with your ESPN the magazine subscription? I think Mercer has improved alot since LCA. They have rushed for over 1800 yards since the LCA game. Sorry for the jabs but I don't like to be called ignorant for the way I think. Like I said, that was the only comparison we had between Mercer,Russell, and Belfry and it means nothing when it comes to who is really the better team.

Not to say that Harrodsburg didn't have talent last year. They just didn't have the numbers.

You're contridicting your self in your own quote. If numbers didn't matter then we wouldn't have classes at all, period. Mercer was going to have a good team this year anyway--getting to merge and be a 3A school playing against 2A schools IS a big advantage. Try to spin it any way you want but put Mercer in 3A this year and they would be a top 10 type team, but not a serious threat to win it. They aren't breaking any rules, just playing the hand that was dealt to them by the KHSAA, but let's not act like this is some kind of landmark achievement that is happening here.

Well, the coaching staff at Mercer hasn't been completely satisfied with everybodys play this year. They are still working on getting the best players in positions to better the team. So the Titans have been shuffling players too just as most teams do early on. We hope these changes make Mercer better as well as the other coaches who try to better their teams for district play and hopes of heading into the playoffs giving their teams the best shot at competing at their highest level.

Numbers as in 900 kids in a school. I said Harrodsburg was 3-8 last season cause they LACKED numbers. No contradiction, Just a misunderstanding. I mentioned that Mercer does have an advantage but it wasn't because of the 400 or so girls that go to school there. It was the senior dominated skill players they got from Harrodsburg. That's where the advantage is. So now those Harrodsburg players who were embarrased all year long due to not having a single backup can show that they are players. Add a little extra splash of talent to a already good Mercer team and you have a great team.

A complete contridiction. Anyway if 900 kids in a school don't matter then why even bother with classes? It matters, go ahead its all right to admit it. Like I said Mercer is playing within the rules that were set for them, those rules just happened to give them a big advantage this year.

I heard they are actually considering making it a state wide holiday if Mercer wins it all. I think they said it would be Remember that time they said it wasn't a landmark achievment now, Titans day. It would fall on every AA title game day. They must be thrilled at Mercer to hear this news if the source is true to his word.

Explain my contradiction. Completely please.

It does so the KHSAA says. I just said that Mercer didn't line up 900 Boys and Girls and pick from them. I said with the added Harrodsburg kids which about a dozen play significant minutes. There true advantage was replacing those seniors from last year with talented seniors this year. They started last year for Harrodsburg. So in reality instead of replacing veterans with youthful inexperiece they replace with talented veteran players. Now they do have an extra 200 kids in the student section that they can use as an intimidation tool. Some of them are pretty scary.

Explain my contradiction. Completely please.

Never mind, you just don't or won't understand. If you read your post you change course about 3 times. Everyone--am I wrong about this?

Picking from 900 kids, sir, is exactly what they are able to do. You see when you add the population from Harrodsburg High to Mercer High and then take the football players from Harrodsburg and add them to the players from Mercer you ARE in fact choosing your team from a student body of 900 children. The other teams in class 2A are in fact not allowed to do this. This is very simple.

This is a dead horse, drop the discussion of Mercer's numbers and move on with the thread.

I agree. That horse is rotting. Where is a pack of hungry coyotes when you need them?

Get a little old when I keep hearing Mercer didn't have speed up until the merge. We all know that this is a untrue statement. Andrew Mccloud had great speed for 4 years as did Walker and Scheller who were the backs last year. Mercer beat Harrodsburg by quite bit last year so someone some where on that team stopped these 2 speedy backs. Not to take away from them because they are great and except for when they played Mercer I cheered for them. Point is Mercer has had some speed prior to this year.
