Football Realignment

Featured Replies

When the next realignment takes place, would the KHSAA look at having an enrollment sliding scale when it comes to placing teams in a particular class?

In other words if you took the enrollment of a particular school and they fall into the lower part of Class AAA, but there are no teams surrounding them in the area to piece a district together... could there be flexibility (say +/- 50 males) that would allow the team to move into another class. (In this case drop down to AA).

Circumstances may be where a team would need to play up in class.

I think it would really help on travel, better gates, natural rivalries, etc.

Thoughts?

Wyoming does this. They allow schools to petition to move up or down depending on local rivals, and where they project they'll be enrollment wise in a few years (that way a 2-year blip doesn't happen, either).

It works very well.

In Kentucky teams are able to petition to play up in class due to geographic isolation, but not to play down.

Would there be anyone in the state who would be right on that bottom level of their class who would be better suited geographically to play down? I'm sure there is someone, but I honestly can't think of anybody right now who stands out.

5 classes and top 2 in each district go to playoffs and this geography problem goes away.

Pendleton County currently maybe?

One thing I found surprising:

KHSAA

2A CAL's enrollment listed in the program: 660

3A Belfry's enrollment listed in the program: 634

My guess is this may be an indicator that one of those two, if not both, may be flipping classifications come the next alignment.

But is that total enrollment or just male enrollment?

I'm not going down the road of any school saying we want to play down or play up and that happens...

I'm suggesting that the KHSAA be allowed to have some flexibility in moving a school to make a district fit together.

Example:

If for some reason Warren East was firmly in 4A and a Warren Central gains enough students to be in 5A, let the KHSAA look at Central's numbers and if it is low enough (25-50 boys), then if it makes the district have 5 teams or keeps another school from major traveling, the KHSAA could place Central into a lower class.

I think the odds are high that Belfry falls to 2A at the next realignment. Not by choice....

Can they expedite Belfry moving out of 3A to this coming season?:lol2:

Corbin will more than likely be moving to 4A at the next realignment, graduated 207 this weekend and have larger classes coming up.

Total but still if it's even close to 50/50 CAL is still larger playing 2A. 6 classes has forced some schools to have to play up because there isn't a district in their class within a 2 hour drive but the next class up has 4 schools within an hour.

Total

It's actually funny seeing the disparity of Belfry vs. Central and then CAL in that program. Central's enrollment is well over 1000 students but Central is an outlier because it is a Nursing Magnet School where a much larger percentage of the enrollment is female.

Relegation would be fun. Lets do relegation.

I think this example is more of the byproduct of a the 4 year average enrollment more than anything.

CAL is a trending school and becoming a hot commodity in East Louisville as a place to send kids. I am sure last year's enrollment is significantly higher than 3 years ago and even more higher than 4 or 5 years ago.

Belfry's enrollment has plummeted over the past four years due to the Coal Industry being decimated. It fought valiantly for a few years but the past couple years you have seen a lot of people being forced to move out of Belfry to find work out of State or in other parts of KY.

I anticipate Belfry will be a 2A School and CAL a 3A School come the next alignment... but it will also be interesting to see some of the other Appalachian 3A schools and what happens with them. I know Sheldon Clark and Pike Central both had to be hurt similarly by the industry.
