Honestly, of all the ideas ever related to this, I think this is by far the best one. Let the cream rise all the way up. Scheduling would probably be a nightmare if they tried to do it every year, but there has to be a hybrid.

All the way up? I like the idea of relegation and promotion, but I'm not sure that I'd want, for example, Mayfield duking it out with Bowling Green or Trinity for 5A or 6A supremecy.

 

Maybe set a ceiling of two classes above a school's natural classification.

Well the way promotion and relegation works in England if interpreted here, you start with the six classes (or however many) by the current method. Each year you could take the four semifinalists and bump them up, and objectively whatever the bottom four of the class above it is. And yes, I think you just go to the nth degree. If Mayfield is good enough to win or finish in the semifinals each and every year in each class, why not go to 6A?

 

There could be some refining, but I honestly believe this would be the best method of working things out and matching teams with appropriate competition. It'll never happen, but I think it's a fantastic model.

I would do it every 2 years DF. Just add up the playoff wins for the 2 years at the top and at the bottom do the 2 year losses like they do the KHSAA tiebreakers now but inversely valuing who you lost to. People immediately think of just how far a Mayfield would move up but equally important would be the opportunity for an Atherton and Ohio county to sink out of 6a and find an equilibrium in a level where games can be competitive and matter.
