Mayfield 14 Paducah Tilghman 7 (OT)

Mayfields schedule will make them stronger come district time, which starts this week..There offense didn't look great but the field conditions and windy weather played a roll in that...I agree, this team has alot of heart and never quits and now that they'll be playing same size schools and getting all there players back healthy, this could shape up to be another long run in the playoffs...there defense is looking much better from week to week after they made some personnel changes and moved some people around...

Field conditions weren't an issue. The field was in very good shape, especially considering the weekend weather.

War Memorial Stadium has to be the most durable field in the state, with two high schools, two middle schools and youth leagues utilizing it at least 2-3 times a week, sometimes more.

I agree...I was able to get down on the field before the game started and walked around and the field was in outstanding conditions seeing how we had over 15 inches of rain over two days. The wind played more of a factor than the field conditions...but both teams had to adjust their play calling depending on which way they were heading. Shelton's thumb is okay, but was a little swollen during the game and afterwards, but he just hit it on a helmet and should be fine. I am extremely encouraged by the defensive effort Sunday as we know that the Cards can move the ball offensively and Sunday was the perfect place for the Cards defense to take over center stage for a while and what a perfect ending with the defense stepping up and sealing the deal. This team will continue to improve and be fun to watch the rest of the way as with this team's heart and determination they will prove to be a very tough team in the playoffs. Just hope the boys can get past all the people telling them how great of a game they played and congratulation them on the win and get focused to take on Fulton County Friday night. Talent wise Mayfield should win this one...but if the Cards come out and still reveling in Sunday's win then it could be closer than what it should.

Who would have ever thought Fulton Co(4-2) and Fulton City(5-0) being your strongest competition...These 2 teams are very similar and would probably be a tossup when they play, but, Fulton Co. has played much better competition, so, I'd give them the edge..Lex Lafayette is top 10 4a team in some polls and Lake Co.,Tn was the preseason pick to win Rgn7, 1a in Tn, so, these 2 teams are formidable...Hope the Cards don't overlook them...

Fulton County was expected to be either the #2 or #3 team in the district before the season. Fulton City has been a surprise.

I agree but it is just hard for people to get use to either Fulton playing good football as they appear to be doing.

I think the verdict is still out on Fulton City...They are 5-0, but, there competition level has been very weak...Gotta give em some credit though, cause they're beating teams by alot...

Fulton County has had some good teams in the past ... beat Mayfield's state championship team in 1993 and made the state semifinals that year. And they were pretty competitive for the rest of the 1990s, with everyone but Mayfield.

Fulton City hasn't been a real factor in quite a while ... both schools are just too small to be good every single year.

Neither has been a recent factor and I think thatis why it is hard atleast for me to see either as a good football team but your points are understood .

I all to well recall the Pilots knocking off Leahy's first Cardinal team that later turned it on and won the state title. Mayfield was up at the half 2 scores and then the roof fell in. I will never forget that night and dont care for a repeat preformance.

What if Fulton County and Fulton City consolidated, a la Harrodsburg-Mercer County. Could you see fairly solid teams every season, or would they constantly be up and down? I'm not familiar enough with either program to make a guess.

Combining Fulton City/County would amount to a better football program obviously but I dont think it would lead to a necessarly sound football program. It is a rural county where there has not (to my knowledge) a structured little league, if over time they did the right things sure they could become fairly formidable but even combined they would not be large and the rural nature and distance between Fulton and Hickman would make it harder to establish a good little league team in my opinion. Westsider may have a better take than I though, he is well traveled with sports in this part of the state

I am surprised that the Fulton schools haven't consolidated already. In my opinion, it only makes sense for them to do so. Both schools produce some very talented athletes and consolidating "could" make for some very good football and b-ball teams. I used quotations on "could" because that area has had issues with getting all of those athletes to play and fully commit to the programs. The overall support also is lacking in my opinion. The potential is high and when they do get a group of kids to stick with it, they can play with anyone. If they ever consolidate and get some stability in the football and b-ball programs, I think they will be very, very tough and extremely exciting to watch . Just my two cents.

I wouldn't say that a consolidated school in Fulton County would be likely to become a state power, but it could easily turn out to be Mayfield's top challenger in the district and region on a semi-regular basis. With the right coach in place (hard to find in such a poor, rural county), they could possibly even make a run to the semifinals every so often.

They had the right coach before this season started...but they wanted to cut his salary in half and now he coaches at Calloway County. He had the discipline that the kids down there in Fulton needed and he was getting that program turned around. Coach Elam was on the team that upset Mayfield and got to the final four that eventually lost to Bardstown so he knows what it takes to be a winner and more importantly how to act with class on and off the field. Just wish the administration at Fulton County had taken the time to learn some of those lessons as well from Coach Elam before helping to kick him out the door. That is just my opinion...I could be wrong!!!

I personally would be for a fulton consolidation as a Mayfield fan cause it would only mean better football in Western KY and would step up the challenge in 1A in this end of the state. Mayfield blowing out the district opponents does nothing to prepare the kids for the end of the playoffs.
