I have a friend who lives in eastern Kentucky who is a big proponent of school consolidation. Years ago, when we first met, he asked me why a county as small as Fulton had two separate school districts.

Fulton is an independent district, and the distance between the two communities (Fulton and Hickman) probably plays a role in the districts remaining separate.

If they combined would they still be 1a?

Yes, their combined enrollment is under 400.

About 15 years ago, the state was encouraging Fulton City, Fulton County and Hickman County to explore the idea of consolidating their school systems. I believe the state was offering, with the use of technology, to make a new multi-county school a prototype for similar consolidations in the future. If memory serves, Hickman County's board nixed any discussions of the issue.

If they put all 3 together I'd think they would be at least a 3a team in the 6 class system and at least 2a in the current system...all 3 schools have approx 200-250 kids...

The three schools combined are around 600 students.

I understand the idea, but there is too much tradition in the school system to combine with other counties. By the way, has there ever been talk of football in either Hickman County or Carlisle County?

I've never heard of Carlisle or Hickman discussing the idea of playing football ... both schools are well under 300 students and in poor, rural counties.

Even if all three schools combined they would still be a 1A school as with the new classification system is not total enrollment but the enrollment of the boy's population in the school...so with that they would still fall into the 1A classification.

Wow, I can't imagine all three combining. Are there any consolidated schools right now that are made up of two separate counties? To me, it makes sense to consolidate the Fulton schools. I know some parents and teachers wouldn't like it, but financially it might be better.

No, it would put them in 2A ... they would have about 300 boys.

No. The state was wanting those three schools to become the "guinea pig" for that kind of merger.

Do you think the state would ever allow a "co-op" football program, similar to what they have in Illinois and some of the Great Plains states? I'm not sure if there are many small schools left playing football who would qualify. It might, MIGHT bring some non-football playing schools into the fold.
