May 10, 20179 yr No way any of us are capable of making judgments on the vast majority of those. Heck I watch politics pretty close and I couldn't come close to naming the last 5 in most of those positions, let alone judging them. But, I'll think about it and offer some opinions on a few of them.

I really only intended them as talking points, but for the sake of discussion I knocked most of the time periods from 50 years down to 20 years. I don't know if that makes a difference or not, but I thought I'd try that instead.

May 11, 20179 yr I'll start with the Supreme Court, though 20 years is practically no time at all on the federal bench. Best: for me, it's Sandra Day O'Connor. Problematic in some areas, outstanding in others, which is probably exactly what we should all think of in a good judge interpreting laws that we do or don't like in varying degrees. She was all over the place on the First Amendment, but consistent in upholding the dignity of people and their property under the Fourth. Had no interest in overturning Roe, but did not favor unrestricted abortion either. Her dissent in Kelo v. City of New London decrying a "reverse Robin Hood" of government in using eminent domain to take property from some private owners then give it to others is one of my all-time favorites in legal writing. Worst: Clarence Thomas The fact that Thomas was the man to replace Thurgood Marshall is one of the all-time kicks in the face in the history of judicial nominations. His opinions rarely contain much, he's frequently inattentive during oral arguments, and his overarching jurisprudential philosophy, originalism, is in my opinion, a complete farce.

Best: Newt Gingrich His party took both houses in 1994 and despite an opposition president, proceeded to ram through almost all of the promises he and his compatriots had promised in the "Contract for America". Measured on sheer effectiveness, I don't see how anyone did more than he did. Worst: Dennis Hastert Come on... the guy went to prison.
