Pierre SD Police Use Forced Catheterization To Obtain Urine Samples

Featured Replies

The police have been using this procedure when suspects have been unwilling or unable to give a urine sample. Examples in the article include a man who officers felt "seemed fidgety" during an domestic dispute investigation a 3 year old boywhose Mom's boyfriend had been arrested after failing a drug test. The child was not potty trained and the police ordered the entire family tested so the child was forcibly catheterized to obtain his sample.

Hooded, handcuffed, and 'violated': South Dakota's use of forced catheterization

See it often in the ER.

Just comply then ... simple as that ... like when a cop tells someone to drop a gun or knife , just do it !!!!

It was a 3 year old...

On a 3 year old boy?

No. Just forced catheterizations in general.

If he's only peeing in a diaper or pullup they have to get the urine sample some how.

Seems like the complaint should be with state representatives...they have the power to change the law. In the case of the 3 year old boy it looks like it was the State Department of Social Services that ordered it, not the police. Police routinely go with Social Services on calls due to the large amount of violence directed at Social Services over the years, but Social Services is the one calling the shots not the police in those situations.

Yeah, those 3 year old kids need to learn some respect for the law. Sexually assaulting them should teach them.

What do you call it when a child is held down while someone shoves a tube into his penis when it is not medically necessary?

It's not sexual assault. There's a medical reason they tested the 3 year old I'm sure. The kid is living in a house full of drug users. Who knows if he had ingested any drugs or not.

I'm not sure how else they would get it? Not a good situation by any means.

Right, but the "comply" comment is irrational when discussing a 3 year old.

Nurses who work with children are pretty good at doing this without traumatizing a child. I doubt he was violently held down and brutally forced.
