I went to class, maybe not as often as I should have.

 

With regard to the professor in question, he offer me his only non need-based lab assistant spot for three semesters, pretty much based on my halfway decent scientific writing skills; then the graduate assistant spot my second year of graduate school. Tutored statistics and experimental psychology as well. The guy was as straight as the proverbial arrow, but was great at developing critical thinking skills.

 

Best I can remember (and to be fair, some of that time was spent in a cannabis-induced fog), liberal/conservative ideology was something that rarely if ever came up in the classes I took (mostly science/math/psychology).

That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the way dissenting voices have pretty much been squelched on campuses. How many times have we heard about people being invited to speak at commencements only to have invitations rescinded because some group took issue with their view point? How many times have we heard of people being invited to speak on a campus only to be either shouted down or threatened so badly that they cancel their speeches? Does the fact that many students seem to be totally unwilling to even allow anyone they deem "offensive" their right to speech bother you? Does the fact the administrations seem unwilling or unable to quell the dissent to the point that opposing viewpoints can not be expressed bother you?

 

I do not like free speech being stifled. I don't like people in administration bowing to a few whiners. It happens in high school sports a lot ... 2 or 3 rampaging parents get coaches fired if they bark enough. The squeaky wheel gets the oil has never been more true.

I think it depends on which departments you're in. Lots of liberals in the arts. A friend of mine from high school teaches a first year English class at a small liberal arts school in the Northeast. Definitely gears his freshman course to try and get people to read things from a different point of view. Lots of feminist or gender-based readings of texts. Stuff that would make several people on this site want to gouge their eyes out... that includes me sometimes.

 

But go try and find me someone that doesn't preach the gospel of deregulation in a finance department in any business school in America. They are few and far between.

 

Are you saying there aren't many liberal Economic professors? That is the next wave of modern liberalism in America. Did you graduate with a business degree of sorts ?

Also on the topic this isn't even a question. It's 100% yes. Look at the speakers who are black balled and the speakers who are allowed. College administrators are much more worrried about the feelings of liberal students than non liberal students.

 

Debate a sensitive liberal proffessor and you will have a black mark your entire career. We can disagree on policy , we can disagree on philosophy, but if you disagree on the the title then wow .

I say no but I am using my own college experience as a template. I don't know how it is these days but as I mentioned in another thread it is pretty easy to switch schools or teachers that are more in line with your train of thought. If I was at a school where I felt like they were pushing a train of thought on me that I didn't agree with then I'd leave that school and find one more suited to my taste. To me it is really that simple.

I have been around college campuses all of my life. In all of the ones I attended or taught at, I never really saw where the school pushed a liberal agenda. There were liberals and conservatives aplenty on each of those campuses. The one that I know the best is ultra-conservative .

I went to four different colleges too.

 

The good news is, I have degrees from 3 of the 4.

Here's basically how I think of it:. There are always going to be some challenging people in your life, whether it be a professor who is liberal or a boss who is an ultra-conservative. We Americans are fortunate to have the freedom to choose whether we want to deal with it, or not. So, I guess it doesn't hurt that we have to start sucking it up in college and dealing with views we don't believe in, or the fact that we'll be judged on our own views as much as we judge others for theirs. Let's all put on our big person panties and move along.
