Why should both teams get a chance? They've had 60 minutes of chances. Even in OT the team on defense has a chance. Stop the other team and you get the ball.
Then why have overtime at all? I mean both teams had 60 mins of chances to win right? Just give them both half the trophy

Regular season I agree. Playoffs you have to do something to decide the winner.

Obviously not the same sport, but how do you correlate that viewpoint with the fact that both teams get the ball in basketball and both get an at-bat in baseball?

Then a coin flip shouldn't decide the winner then. Let both teams have the same opportunity. I just don't understand the "If they score a TD the game is over but if they kick a FG the other team gets the ball" Makes zero sense at all.

I like the rules. It is not easy to score touchdowns in the NFL. A touchdown is the only way the game ends without both teams possessing the ball.

Sorry but after they flip the coin both teams come out, one on offense and one on defense. If a coin flip decided it then after the Patriots called heads and it was heads the trophy would have been awarded. A coin flip didn't decide the game. Had the Falcons stopped the Patriots and forced a punt they would have had an opportunity.

Everyone knows with the current OT rules in place that whoever wins the coin flip has a huge advantage. They have the opportunity to win the game without the other team even touching the ball. That is huge. It should be done fairly where both teams have an opportunity to score just like in every other sport that has OT. So would you be fine if in Basketball in OT the first team that has the ball if they score on that possesion then the game is over? Or how about Baseball, in extra innings if the first batter for the visiting team hits a home run then the game should be over?

I didn't say it had to be one way or the other. If the NFL gave both teams a possession I wouldn't have an issue.

Don't like it, win the game in regulation. Pretty simple.

Then like I said earlier, then no OT and split the trophy. Don't like it win it in regulation.

Right because splitting the trophy is a realistic option.

I wasn't necessarily meaning that you did. My apologies.

I think it should be based on yardage gained + First Downs + How many times inside the 20!

That's the way it used to be in KHSAA football, even in the playoffs. :thumb:

I think you did. I just wasn't sure how to respond as I don't think it should be one way or the other. I just don't get the up roar you always get about OT rules.
I recommend the college rules, but start it at the 50.

I could go with that.
