Can't blame social media. People have sucked as long as they've existed. Humans crave power and dominance over one another. Humans have always been horrible. All one had to do is pay attention. But it's not social media's fault.

 

 

While that is true, social media has acted as a force multiplier in this arena and allowed people who are crazy to realize that there are other crazies and let their voices ring louder.

My life is great actually. I am in no hurry to check out, but the rest of humanity kinda needs to go.

 

I just have seen nothing in the grand scheme of humanity in the last decade to make me think that our species deserves to continue. The last 2 years have really altered my perspective. The rise of the anti-intellectualism, the rise of populism, the polarization of politics, the return to the nationalist sentiments of a pre- WWI world, and the ease with which people can find "alternative facts " disgusts me.

 

Time to wipe the slate clean and let the planet start over.

This whole thread is negative. "People suck" , I disagree. I think in general people are good and have the best intentions when given the chance. There are bad people but the rhetoric in this thread is weird and appaling.

I find it no more appalling the half of the rhetoric in most of the threads in this particular forum. Yes this is blatant hyperbole, but brought on by the exasperation of our current political discourse.

 

You and I honestly agree on more things politically than we disagree on. You are likely more of a populist than I will ever be, but I find the anti-intellectualism of the current wave of populism to be the most disconcerting thing about it. Anti-establishment I agree with 100%, but anti-intellectualism is as dangerous for free thought as communism is for free markets.

 

Am I really worried about our country as a whole? Yes I am. Am I expecting total societal collapse? Don't be ridiculous. I don't care much about social and domestic policy, I have always been more concerned with foreign policy. As such I have been extremely unhappy with the previous administration and I am extremely ambivalent about the current administration as I feel like he is far too mercurial in my estimation to handle foreign affairs properly. If he turns out to be great at this I will be extremely happy, but I am holding my breath. I had the same perspective on his predecessor as well.

 

My biggest concern with the current situation is that I loathe single party control as I don't feel as though any party should have the ability to force their agenda through fully. I have been a fan of divided government for a long time as it traditionally has forced some level of compromise. I don't like the idea of the Democrats having total control as we get AHCA and other half baked items and I don't like the Republicans having total control as now we will likely be seeing a higher degree of evangelical/religious right influence in congress.

 

As a libertarian I am disgusted by the socialist tendencies of the Democrats and the weird intrusiveness into people's personal lives by the Republicans. When you have a wave of populism like this I see danger. As someone descended directly from those directly impacted by the Bloody Monday riots in Louisville I am inherently cautious when I see nativism, the No-Nothings are still around but in a different form.

 

So yes this is hyperbole, but there is a rationale behind my absurdist tendencies. I guess I am a bit too much of a fan of Swift for most.

Prioritization is not among liberals' strength. I also like a similar saying, "If everybody is responsible, then nobody is responsible." There is no quicker way to destroy a company or government owned vehicle than to designate it a "pool vehicle."

I don't want to put words in SF's mouth, and I'm about the farthest thing from a biblical scholar that someone can be. Which prompts a serious question.

Yes. McPapa I think tons of people believe that we and the universe just did not happen by chance. Many scientists and many theory's point to intelligent design. Its really hard for us to get our head wrapped around how and why "we are" to speak. How did we get here? How was the universe created? Did we evolve as in Darwins theory? What was the big bang? All these are great questions that I have asked myself since I can remember as I am sure many have.

 

Genesis 1:1 says, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" a scripture I am sure many here are familiar with. Genesis itself is derived from a Greek word meaning beginning. Hebrew "bre ***Word Filter Violation - Edit Your Post******Word Filter Violation - Edit Your Post******Word Filter Violation - Edit Your Post******Word Filter Violation - Edit Your Post***h" meaning basically "In the beginning" God ( Elohim) Created (Bara) Ex Nihlo( which means to create something out of nothing).

 

Now I said all that to say this. God, as we humans like to call him( for better terms I will use him, not to offend the ladies) I do not think can really be defined as to what he is. Even to study the greatest scholars on this subject they themselves cannot get "God" "ID" as you like to call this being or entity, defined as to what "God" really is. Its really hard to get our brain, which we only use a very small percentage of, to understand the complexity of a "God" that can create something out of nothing, or the fact that we cannot explain the power( thats the best word I can come up with) that a being would have to be able to create this universe and Earth and the human race in particular.

 

Everything I have just said goes against the very nature almost of how we rationalize as humans. We try to explain things away so we can understand things. Its human nature to want to think we "Know it all" and in order to do that we have to explain away "ID" or God as I like to call him.

 

When we throw Jesus and the Holy spirit into the equation in what the foundation of Christianity is based on then it really becomes confusing to what our mind says is common sense, yet I think most if they really think on this will come to the realization that some form of "ID" or God certainly had his hand in the creation of the universe.

 

My path to God/Jesus/Christianity came through many questions and lots of experiences as well as somethings I could not explain. I have wrote way to much here( feel like someone else I know on here that writes a book lol) but this is a subject I like.

 

But yes many people believe in ID but not Christianity. Not saying they are all wrong, cause I think they have part of the mystery solved and are getting closer. I have told Science Friction a few things that has shaped my beliefs in Christianity and those things make me a firm believer. And a firm believer who used to be a skeptic just like others here are now.
