Beechwood started 4 eighth graders last night. The Tigers have had a few players quit the team also..

Huddy: Mainly concentrating on football right now. He may play some AAU bball schedule permitting.

 

Ahlfeld: They moved back to Boone Cty where all of his family is all at.

Baby Birds are fine.

Lotsa of individual, young talent, just at times look like they don't enjoy playing together or not very invested for sure. Don't take care of the ball/possessions.

Coach/staff are very nice folks - but first year and like all staff, a public school professional/teacher as coach - checking a lot of public/family PT boxes there.

The coach rolls 10 or so kids out each game - and always a different line up and kid scoring - so all good. This 10 kid strategy may ensure more bodies for JV/Varsity but it looks very recreational at times...which is probably the point with these 13 year olds I guess. Different times. 10 years a go I was asked to assist 7th grade hoopsters at HMS and watching first day of "try-outs" and the varsity coach, (who's jersey needs to be retired & hung), and a great man and coach came up to me and asked what i thought. I pointed to one hoopster trying out and said - he's very long and can jump; can't score or handle yet - but maybe down the road. He looked me square in the eyes and said "I wish him the very best, and he can get stronger and better on his time - not mine." Ok then. Different times for sure.

So why play AAU basketball if you are not going to play for your high school? Makes zero sense.

 

Did other kid leave because the path to the QB spot at HHS was blocked or did he move because that is where family was at? Find it odd that you attend HMS and 1 semester at HHS and then all of a sudden decide to move near family in Boone County. Hopefully this is not one of those situation where things do not go one's way so we move to the next place and so on and so on. High school over and kid has been at 3 or 4 schools "searching" for that opportunity.

Some interesting points you make here. First, I agree that said coach should have jersey hanging in the rafters. Was leading scorer in school history when he was done and should also be in the school Hall of Fame in the next few years.

 

As for your comments about not buying in, I ask why there is not buy in. 3 8th graders getting a chance to cut their teeth at the frosh level and keep hearing that they may not be playing basketball beyond this year or next? So what does that do to kids in the frosh class who are losing playing time now.

 

I only witnessed the second half last night, but did note that there really seemed to be little to no cohesiveness from coaching staff on down the line. If I am coaching this team, the offense runs through Salter in some way shape or form, much like the varsity offense should run through Finfrock. Play inside/out rather than jacking up outside shot after outside shot.

The (3) 8th graders will ALL continue to play hoops thru HS, as long as they are healthy for certain.

Having the frosh hoops coach Franzen leave for Cov Cath (I think) - after he coached these kids all summer - that certainly did not help this team chemistry etc.

 

And big, talented Salter, bouncing around between JV/Frosh.. he just joined the Frosh team after other player's departure. Net, these kids have never played together as close unit - and it shows.

 

I can't comment on sets or framework - don't really know the personnel/skillsets or the coaching strategies/framework moving forward.

I can't answer that question about Huddy. You'd have to ask him that. I would say he's a football kid and bball wasn't a top priority for the amount of time you have to put in at the school level. I agree it's not the traditional thing to do, but AAU is more weekend based and less practice for the traveling teams.

 

As far as the other kid. It doesn't always have to be a conspiracy theory. Family gets a new house in Boone Cty and you have to move? I believe he was in Ft Thomas since elementary school and moved after 2 semesters of his freshman year. The majority of his family is all within 5 miles now.

 

If you have to move 3-4 times trying to find an "opportunity" in sports then you and your family have bigger problems than just sports!!! Considering he was given the offensive MVP at HHS in football this year I don't think he needed to go searching for any opportunities.
