Coroner probe raises questions (in Henderson)

Featured Replies

While the heat may not have directly caused his death, individuals with heart conditions (or any other such chronic ailment for that matter) are more susceptible to heat illness. I would say the heat and apparent disregard for KHSAA / KMA heat guidelines (which include unrestricted access to water) certainly contributed to this young man's demise. I imagine a court of law will see it as such as well...:thumb:

Don't worry. Once the dust starts to settle and things get rolling, I am SURE it will happen.

Bull, then people wouldn't be able to hide behind a user name.

There are plenty of people that don't need to hide behind a username. This is nothing that wouldn't be said six inches from the man's face.

Why does this matter? Why are you so worried about people "hiding behind a username?" The coroner isn't. He said that the cause of death was a heart ailment and it was triggered fromt he heat. The guy supposedly called somewhere to get the heat index and there are questions about that. Duffy has a history of being overtop, eccentric, and old school. Not letting a kid get a drink of water according to his wife and assistant???????? Wonder what their usernames are????

As far as these little machines go to register heat index, the actual machines vary. I have two machines being held side by side and produce 20 degree differences. What is to be done with that.

On another note, most Head coaches in this state are hired to "Coach" football. School sytsems need to start hiring trainers or outside people to come in and help these coaches with some of these things. It is ridiculous for coaches to have to worry about taking heat indexis so many times a practice.

As for Coach Duffy bashing, Coach brought water to the practice field in the early 80's at Danville long before other coaches were openly supplying water. He was ahead of the game at that time and I don't see him changing. As for how he treats his players, everyone has their opinions and after a tragedy like this, it is not the time to wash the dirty laundry hiding behing some bogus user name.

My heart breaks when I read articles like this. I, of course, have no way of knowing what happened and wouldn't dare to make an observations one way or the other. I just pray that a game never becomes more important than a childs life.

I have to wonder why football is still being played in July and August. After all we have learned about heat illness, these things are still happening.

I am referring to the numerous people that make accuastions behind a user name but can't back it up when asked too. Mainly speaking of the comments posted on the Gleaner website.

This tragic event reminds me of another recent tragic event, the Comair crash. The reason they are similar is that not ONE thing or ONE person can be blamed. There were several contributing factors that caused this young mans death. The heat, his heart condition, proper heat index detection, not enough water breaks….etc……etc…… The only thing we all can hope is that this young man didn’t die in vain and the KHSAA puts in place VERY strict measures and controls to insure that nothing like this ever happens again! May he rest in peace.

They were given water breaks every ten minutes. The KHSAA requires water breaks every 30 mins.

The facts and blame (if any) in this tragic situation will cme out soon enough. I think that the speculation regarding Coach Duffy is not productive and may be grossly unfair.

I agree.

This is a good ending point.
