"Right-to-work" bill being introduced to the Kentucky Legislature

I'm conservative, but I believe unions do have a role. Employers discarding people because they can hire someone cheaper/younger/better looking etc is not something I'm comfortable with and I do believe there does need to be an effective check.

On the flip side of that, the union protects crappy workers and makes it difficult to fire them.

Do you think all jobs should be unionized?

Union membership has been dropping rapidly the last few decades.

I'm not against unions. I have two brothers who are union workers and I was in Kroger union in HS. I just believe in the free market and when Unions have a monoply on jobs at a company I don't like it. Let's face it there are a lot crappy locals and local leaders. Also the National leaders don't listen to their workers when it comes to politics. They treat the union members as children and they know best.

Unions do a lot of good and good unions won't be affected by right to work. If you show workers the benefit they will want to join. If you don't do much then you will lose members. It forces local leadership to pick up their game.

I know @PurplePride92 seems like a passionate leader and I'm sure he has a good local. But not all are the same. I believe freedom should allow workers a choice and if there is a good job oppurtunity I should not be forced into a union if I don't see value.

The twist on this is there are older workers who get to keep a job even though they are lazy. They get the easiest job because of senority not becausd of merit.

If Unions went more merit based that would solve a major gripe I have. You shouldn't get a raise or a position based on just having a pulse.

How have the states that have recently passed Right to work laws doing ? Is there documented negatives or outcomes by states going right to work ?

Jackie Ed brings up a valid point. Why is non-union better?

Most folks on here know how involved I am with unions. Convince me to leave my union. What can be said to me to convince me that not being in my union anymore is a benefit to me and my family?

I'm pretty sure nothing would change your mind, just like nothing would have made me think that it would have been better for me and mine.

I don't have a problem with people not being forced into a union. I do have a problem with the union having to protect those employees who choose not to be in the union. From what I am reading unions are still required to protect those employees.

On the flip side of that, the union protects crappy workers and makes it difficult to fire them.

And on the flip side of that people who choose not to be in the union at a unionized plant are still protected by the union when they get in trouble.

That's fine and dandy but this is the actual reality I live now. I'll have a choice to make really soon and I want to know why I should leave my union. I just want to know the advantages or disadvantages and why I should leave my union. Folks want Right to Work but don't know why they want it. I don't understand it.

Why will you have a choice to make? Even if passed, all unions would stay in place unless the workers decided to boot them.

The older you ate the better the union is for you in most cases. Younger/newer workers can advance quicker in non-union environment, by getting a chance to be promoted on merit instead of seniority.

My dad was a Teamsters for most of his working career, for the most part it was good for him. Some shady happening gs in Louisville cost him some retirement benefits, but as a whole the Teamsters were good for him.

Our union is going to cease to function as a result of Right to Work. It is inevitable. At some point folks will have to make a life changing decision. No one will want to be on the wrong side of the choice.

This is a false train of thought. You take away the union here at Corning and it won't change your chances for advancement at all.

Why? When Indiana went Right to Work, I haven't seen any cases of this. Why would it happen to your company?

I really wonder if Right to Work will really have the affect people think it will. Indiana's switch seems to have very minimal affect on workers.
