Also one of the youngest. 10-3 is not falling on your face either.

Three of the four are. I would put Jimbo in front of Petersen for now. Dabo is 3, Urban 2, & Saban 1.

We have very different opinions of falling on your face. 10-3 and finishing the top 10 (probably around 8) is not really falling on your face.

 

Some of you on here have a real negative fixation on the Noles. I spent most of the season reading about how overrated they were, and yet here they'll end up, with a top ten finish, and with strong closing wins over Florida and Michigan. Never mind that they lost their best defensive player in the second week, and that by the time they got to Clemson they were missing both their starting safeties. (But please, ESPN, do go on about Peppers.) Ultimately I look at FSU from this season and I see a loss on the road to a UL team that could scarcely be hotter at the time, and a 50/50 game against Clemson that didn't go their way. The only one that even bothers me is the UNC game, and yeah, that wasn't great. When I look at a guy like Harbaugh, he wouldn't have happened to have any losses this season that would make you scratch your head, now would he?

 

As a Jimbo guy, I have a difficult time co-signing on Dabo as better than him, but he has certainly done better with what he had in the last two seasons.

jimbo came into the season with his Noles ranked #4. He didn't make the playoffs and deservedly so. Who cares where you finish if you don't make the playoffs. ACC was supposed to be so good with FSU, UL and Clemson. Yet UL tanked, FSU tanked and all that is left is Clemson. Congrats Jimbo on finishing out of the hunt with what many thought was a top 4 team. You lost to UL who lost to UK lol.

Dabo has been to a title game and could go to a second one in a row. Harbaugh may do the same, but at this point he can't beat OSU let alone contend for a title.

Just using the same criteria that you all used against Harbaugh when it was said he hadn't won a championship so he can't be listed above Jimbo. Well Dabo also hasn't won a championship. Just pointing out the facts. I didn't know it was a revolving criteria that can be dismissed when it doesn't suit someone's argument is all.

 

I personally can't stand Harbaugh. I think he's a butt. Still doesn't mean he's a bad coach.

So in your opinion, anyone that was considered to be in playoff contention that didn't make it had a team that "fell on their face"?

 

I recognize you are arguing with several different people so not every argument is tailored to me, but that's how this struck me. We can agree that FSU fell short of expectations. We can not agree that they "tanked" or that they "fell on their face". When I note where they'll finish, it's an argument against your statement that they did either. Not to mention that while they were rated fourth, they were rated behind Clemson, and even under the best of circumstances, it would have been difficult for them to make the playoffs behind an ACC champion Clemson team. I'm not certain that if that was FSU's only loss of the year that they'd have been in. I think a one-loss OSU and one-loss Pac 12 champion Washington would have still been above them.

 

That being said, if it is your opinion that anyone who didn't make the playoffs is not worth discussing because 'who cares about them - they didn't make the playoffs', then yes, I suppose the four coaches who led their teams to the playoffs are the best in America.

I never said he was a bad coach, I just didn't put him ahead of Dabo or Jimbo at this point, no shame in being a top 10 coach but not in the top 4. Dabo and Jimbo both have accomplished more than he has at this point in their college coaching careers.

ND definitely was the definition of overrated.

 

Also no one is claiming LSU or ND's coach (Miles or Kelly) as one of the best in the game.

 

My point is simple. If Jimbo is such a great coach then he should have been in the playoffs after starting the season ranked #4. Not everyone had their team in the top 4 now did they? If Jimbo is one of the greatest coaches in college ball then you'd think having a top 4 team would have been good enough to get into the playoffs. Just my opinion. Great coaches win with great teams. Meyer didn't even have his buckeyes in the top 4 pre season yet he made it. That's all.
