Creator of Solo red cups dies at 84 - NY Daily News

You've probably drunk from his red Solo cups at parties without knowing it.

Robert Leo Hulseman, inventor of the Solo red cups, died on Dec. 21 at age 84.

The family man started working at the Solo Red Cup Company when he was 18 years old and worked his way up to CEO, inheriting the business from his father in 1980.

He was known as an innovator, a hands-on manufacturing expert, and an industry pioneer, Hulseman's obituary read.

The company debuted the cone-shaped paper cups in the 1940's and, when Hulseman took over, he implemented a new design with a bright color.

Country singer Toby Keith made the red cups famous by featuring them in his song, Red Solo Cup.

Now a red solo cup is the best receptacle for barbecues tailgates fairs and festivals, Keith sings, praising the cups.

Not a single mention of the ping pong balls that took the red cup to the mainstream.

Disagree. I went to college in the pre beer pong era. Even still red solo cups were prevalent at any keg party.

It's amazing how something that simple can make a person rich. Sorta like the invention of the Frisbee. People had been throwing hub caps, flat rocks, and washers for years and gliding them through the air, then someone had the bright idea of the Frisbee to cash in on the fun.
