2016 Coaches of the Year - Courier Journal

Featured Replies

The state's coaches have voted Philip Haywood overall 2016 Coach of the Year. This is his 5th time receiving the award.

Excellent article by @Jason Frakes that delves into the relationship between Haywood and Scroggins. This is a good read

Belfry's Haywood named CJ Coach of the Year

CJ COY honors in each of the respective classes:

Ryle’s Mike Engler (6-A)

South Oldham’s Jamie Reed (5-A)

Franklin-Simpson’s Doug Preston (4-A)

Central’s Ty Scroggins (3-A)

Christian Academy’s Stefan LeFors (2-A)

Hazard’s Mark Dixon (A).

Congrats to Coach Dixon. He did a great job at Hazard and deserves recognition for the job he did this year.

However, anyone who looked at Hazard and Beechwood on the field before the championship game knows Beechwood's Noel Rash should be 1A Coach of the Year. That's ok though. Championship trophy is in Ft. Mitchell and that is what matters.

It's one of those things where the name Beechwood only gets you credit when you talk about titles and everyone expects you to be there ever year even though this beechwood team was a young team.

Only thing I can think of is they didn't expect hazard to be there. I myself didn't expect until 2017 and 2018 for the finals but let's hope for my sake they make it back.

It is interesting that most of the coaches listed did not win a title.

I will say if Coach Rash didn't win, I am glad Dixon did. I do think he did a great job this year with a team similar to Beechwood's in the youth category.

Thank You to those that voted for me. I know there are many great coaches out there that could easily be on this list. That makes this a great honor.

Well deserved Coach. :thumb:

Congrats to Coach Engler. Really happy to see him doing well at Ryle. He is missed at Lexington Catholic.

Congrats to South Oldham's Jamie Reed! Great to work with you, coach!

Coach Reed did a phenomenal job this past season. Well done coach!

Big time props to all the coaches on the list. And a special congrats from here to Coach Reed at South Oldham.

I have a question about the voting; do coaches vote for multiple coaches in each class or just one?

The reason I ask is because of this line in the article... "Haywood received 11 votes in a statewide survey of coaches, with 105 returning ballots. Franklin-Simpson’s Doug Preston, Bowling Green’s Kevin Wallace and Casey County’s Steve Stonebraker were runners-up with seven votes apiece. Christian Academy’s Stefan LeFors received six votes."

If Preston, Wallace and Sonebraker were runners-up in the voting, then how did Wallace (5A) and Stonebraker (3A) not win COY in their respective classes?

Preston won 4A and LeFors won 2A

There are lots of coaches every year worthy of recognition, and all of the above certainly fit the bill.

I have to voice a little bit of disappointment, though, that Jim Matney from Johnson Central was overlooked in the voting. He turned in maybe the most impressive coaching job of all, and had his team playing at the highest level during the playoffs. They were a machine. I realize his lack of votes was more based on popularity, or lack of it, than true coaching acumen. That's too bad too, because he is a great coach.

Also, looking at the history of this award, how has Ty Scoggins never won COY? That shocked me.

Congrats to Coach Reed on a great year with South Oldham. Program is moving forward each year and look forward to seeing where next year takes the Dragons.

I would agree on Matney. I have voted for him several times as well as Dudley Hilton over the years. I think they are two of the best. They have both helped me along the way. I have had the unfortunate luck of having to coach against them in state championship games. Both times I have found out I still have a long way to go. But, I guarantee you that if it comes down to getting the COY honor or winning that final game we would all give the individual award back in a trade for the championship. There are some super coaches out there. I don't know how many won this type of award but guys like Jerry Perry, Marty Jaggers (retired), Tim Schlosser (retired), Johnny Poynter, Brad Hood, Mark Peach, David Barnes, Marc Clark, Larry Mofield, Mike Rogers, Justin Haddix, Chris Larkey, Larry French, Ray Graham (retired), Wayne Mills, Scott Russel, John Myers, Mike Marksbury, Mark Brown and David Buchanan are just a few that come to mind really quickly that I have either coached against or gotten to know over the years that do or did a tremendous job.

To add to my thoughts on this I would like to thank all the coaches out there that put in the time and effort to keep the great game of football in our state moving forward and upward. I often tell my players that I have great admiration for high school football players (especially my guys) due to the character, effort and love they show for teammates and the game of football. I feel the same way about high school coaches. You guys are a special group.

Congrats to all the coaches, so deserving in a thankless job.
