Should Bob Stoops Lose his Job for This?

Mixon claims the girl used a racial slur against him. I know it doesn't matter to most of you but it makes it an intense and charged situation where composure and poise are needed the most. He still shouldn't have hit her and I am fine with his one year "suspension." If they had dismissed him from school I wouldn't oppose that either. FSU dismissed De'Andre Johnson when he was caught on tape hitting a woman for making a racial slur at him. He was just signed by Florida Atlantic University after going through anger management, community service, etc. In that situation I would have been fine with him being "suspended" for a year but I understand why people feel he/they should be dismissed and that feeling doesn't bother me either. I don't blame Oklahoma or FSU for how they handled their situations.

I believe he said a gay male with the girl used the racial slur. He said the girl blew smoke his way and he was going to confront her for being disrespectful.

I read somewhere that he said she used a racial slur at him and then he got slammed for bringing the race card into it. I can't remember where I read it though. Somewhere on twitter there was a link tweeted. Either way he still lacked composure and poise necessary to de-escalate these situations. I understand his inability to compose himself when racial slurs or thrown but I see why he flew off the handle if racial slurs where thrown. Just an entirely different emotion when you know they are being used in a demeaning and insulting manner.

I agree with you. They released the police interview today and he barely mentioned the racial slur though. He said the male called him a racial slur and he called the male a gay slur. The way he describes it, it doesn't sound like that's what set him off. He said the girl slapping him felt like a dude and that's why he reacted.

So he was disciplined by the school and by the state? I got no problems then.

Don't take this as an excuse for him to hit her because there isn't one, but she needs to learn to not lay her hands on a man either. As we can see from the video, some men don't have the same respect for women that many of you obviously have. She needs to be smarter than that.

Our society has a lot of problems with things that are seen as norms in the treatment between genders. One is how men treat women in general. Way down the ladder, but a component, is that I think we're often ingrained to believe it isn't a big deal when a woman physically assaults a male. She in no way deserved to have that happen, but she definitely should not have initiated contact either. That wasn't OK for her to shove him, or hit him. I saw in the linked article where they noted that "she isn't a football player", but it would have been no less right or wrong if he'd been a non-athlete. For either of them.

I do not believe a man should hit, slap, or otherwise physically abuse a woman in any manner. I would have a hard time having him on my team. But given the physical provocation that preceded it, I also have a hard time with the concept that Stoops should be fired for the specific discipline he instituted.

Pretty shocked for anyone to even remotely justify what he did with the fact that she pushed/hit him first. Does that make it ok for me to knock my 7 year old across the room when hits me? I mean, if he wants to come at me like a man then....

Response has to be proportional to the threat. What exactly was the threat to him when she pushed and tried to smack him?

You're right - an adult choosing to physically attack someone is totally the same as your seven year old child. Dial down the hyperbole.

BTW, your specific message is that it was OK for her to do whatever she wanted to him since she wasn't a threat. It is not justification for an adult to attack someone just because they're not a threat. Had this been her male friend who did the attacking - who was also at a significant disadvantage physically - would his physical response have been any more or less warranted? Because when you remove the gender from the equation, there are a great many people who would indicate that at that point they are fair game. If I attack a male boxer who has 80 pounds on me, I've got a hunch there's not going to be a great deal of sympathy for me when he caves my face in.

The fact that she physically attacked him is a consideration whether you'd like it to be or not. That is not the same thing as saying he was justified in the level of his response. He should not have hit her at all. But it does introduce levels of gray as it comes to the magnitude of his punishment.

Sorry, guess I missed the part of my own post where I said she was ok to do what she wanted because she wasn't a threat. Should she have done what did, nope. Does it in any way justify what he did, nope. Fact is men and women aren't equals physically. And to defend this guy's actions, who is in probably the top 10% genetically, because she gave him a shove and half a slap is laughable. He broke her face. He didn't grab her, he didn't push her, he didn't smack her...he knocked her out and broke her face. In what world is that acceptable?

Nobody is defending the guy. Women shouldn't assume that they are dealing with a gentleman when they go pushing and slapping a guy around. High probability she doesn't get knocked out if she just keeps her hands to herself. Doesn't excuse what he did.

Feel free to point out where I - or anyone else in the thread for that matter near as I can tell - either defended his actions or defined them as acceptable. Acceptable would imply that someone felt that the offenses were equivalent. They weren't. That's why he had charges against him, and she didn't. It's why he had the punishment he had. If they'd been deemed acceptable then you'd have posters indicating that he shouldn't have any punishment whatsoever. You seem to be inferring defense of him or acceptance of his actions because we disagree on the magnitude of the punishment. Not even that, since I did not state that, but on whether or not we feel that Stoops was justified in the specific punishment he chose to dole out after what the state did. Her physical contact is a mitigating factor. It is not the same as saying he was justified in his response. But it is a factor. If she had not done that and he'd have done the same thing, my assumption is that he would have been in jail for assault.

Then I guess we are arguing the same point. My original post wasn't directed to you but more to what I've heard on talk radio and read on social media.

That said, I disagree he goes to jail regardless of what she did or doesn't do.

What if this was Dan Mullins daughter? I've mixed feelings on this. I have two daughters and if this occurred to either of them I believe I'd be currently in jail for some form of murder or attempted murder. I can justify the dudes actions if he just grabbed her or even shoved her away but to knock her out is just not even defendable. So she may have dropped the N bomb on him? He needs to man up and walk away.

I've also been a teenage boy with a very short fuse( which I still wrestle with everyday). I can fully see why he reacted the way he did, you don't think "This is probably a horrible idea", you just react. But as has been said before for every action there is a result and not all results are good. Dude should've been tossed off the team. If this was Stoops daughter or niece what's the end result? Life's lessons are usually learned the hard way.

Mixon still doesn't feel he was in the wrong.

Recently his attorney said he should've been allowed to defend himself against an attack, and that he (Mixon) felt she hit him like a man would....

That just tells me Mixon's never been hit like a man or he is the world's biggest you know what. It's also starting to look like Mixon instigated the entire thing. He and some of his friends were allegedly harassing the girl's gay friend. To get away from Mixon they went inside the restaurant. Mixon follows them in to continue the harassment. He claims the friend called him a racial slur. Maybe so but I don't buy it. The guy was sitting next to a black friend. Why would he use a use racist language sitting next to a black friend.
