Backcourt violation

Featured Replies

Team A on offense. Pass is made from wing (player 1) to the point (player 2). Team B player gets a finger on the pass and the pass continues to player 2. Player 2 reaches for it and it skips off his hand to the backcourt. Player 2 then goes back to get the ball.

I say this is still a backcourt violation because a player from Team A touched it last and even though a player from Team B deflected the original pass, Team B never gained possession?

Does a deflection mean that Team A lost possession?

You are correct and in the minority that know this.

Last to touch in front court and first to touch in back court = violation.

Another situation. Team A is taking the ball out of bounds underneath their own basket. They throw the ball towards half court. It is tipped by player 1 on Team A on their side and then goes into backcourt, he then goes and gets the ball. Over and back or not?

@Clyde don't answer this yet.

I don't think possession was established in the frontcourt. Play on.

Over and back if Player 1 touched it.

Correct

What if.......

Throw-in from midcourt.

A1 jumps from front court , catches the pass, and then comes down in the back court?

As for the OP, I would have assumed that was a violation as Team A was the last team to touch it.

I would say no violation.

Different than if A1 jumps from back court, catches the ball, then lands in front court. Didn't establish position in front court first.

Not considered possession since they were taking it out.

I would say no violation.

Correct.

Does it change if the pass is touched first by the defender?

Correct.

Does it change if the pass is touched first by the defender?

I would say it doesn't change in either scenario?

Yes

I would say it doesn't change in either scenario?

Yes

I assume ATM is replying to my last question. If so, he is correct. It would be a violation.
