Safe pick. The team my wife fondly calls The Cliffords will be very good again and should have little trouble in their region. Belfry will not step back as much as a lot of people think (hope) they will. They will be the favorite in their region.

 

This game would be in Belfry, which will make it interesting, but for the first time in a while, the Pirates will not be the favorite in this game. I wouldn't count them out, with all the experience on the team, and more importantly on the coaching staff. They know what it takes to get it done in big games.

I tend to agree with you, I look for Corbin and Central to both be primed for a championship run. Looking at it this early is folly, of course, but I would have Corbin a favorite in that game.

The big question for Corbin, and the biggest question standing in the way or potentially getting past Belfry, can the Redhounds upgrade their speed and athleticism on the edges?

 

I really felt it hurt them against Central (narrow win), Mayfield and Belfry (only losses). Even against Casey County in the Regional Finals it was plays on the edge, missed tackles, and generally bad angles to the ball that caused them issues.

 

Corbin otherwise was a very stingy Defense and did a great job of assignment football in the box.

 

This is the second straight year that Belfry has gashed Corbin outside, and with a team like Central or Etown potentially waiting in the Finals it is going to be paramount for the Hounds to improve here to have a legit shot at a title.

On the contrary, the question everyone in 3A has to be asking is can they stop Corbin from doing what they do best on Offense?

 

Even Belfry has struggled with the methodical march of the Redhounds relying on the Tim Tebow of Kentucky football (that's a compliment). When Corbin was giving Belfry fits they were controlling the football mixing short runs by the backs, designed QB runs, and intermediate passing. They ate the clock, kept the Defense on the field, and took very strategic deep shots once the Safeties had to honor play action.

 

Belfry now loses three very good Defensive Linemen, and to be honest I am not sure there was a Defensive Front as good as Belfry in 3A last year... to knock off Corbin it is going to take making plays up front and creating negative yardage. Will anyone have the horses to do this?

Boyle's freshman and sophomore classes were absolutely loaded this year, I've been told by one of the coaches that Smith had made the comment that this years freshman class was the best he's seen in both of his tenures at Boyle , the freshman class as 8th graders beat Lexington Catholic 54 to 14 and the score could have been a lot worse. I think a lot depends on who's the starting QB at Boyle next season if it's Reed Lanter I expect a good season. Boyle's only losing 9 seniors and the fact that Central and Lexington Catholic both are graduating around 17 or 18 seniors which makes around 40 to 45 seniors these two schools have lost over the past two seasons IMO should start to catch up with them. I expect Boyle to be in the hunt next year.

 

I am thinking that Boyle will return bout 7 or 8 starter on both sides of the ball. It really depends on who you consider a starter. They did start different personal in a lot of games.

Not sure how your post relates to mine the only starting position I mentioned was QB, but I guess you're right about it depends on who's starting. I expect a lot of young players to be starting for Boyle this coming season.

We both have our biases on who should be the starter. I have no problems at all with Lanter being the starter but based on what we saw from both players last season the coaches made the right decision. We are now in the offseason and the coaches will once again evaluate every position on the field this spring and summer and make a decision on who they feel will give Boyle County the best chance to win. I always preach that we need to trust the coaches and I have no desire to change that philosophy. Chuck Smith and Chris Pardue know football and this team more than you and I combined times 10. Whoever they decide to name the starter will be deserving and will have their trust. I will be fine with whomever of the three is named the starter. I have faith in all three to do what is expected of them and I will never question the decisions of the coaching staff.
